Ethiopian society and history: a bibliography of Ethiopian studies 1957-1990

Au premier millenaire avant notre ere, l'Ethiopie entre en contact avec la culture semitique. Cette recontre donne lieu a l'elaboration assez rapide d'une synthese ou l'element aborigene — les Proto-Ethiopiens — s'assimile une religion, des usages etrangers et se cree de nouveaux modes d'existence. Les plus anciens monuments archeologiques temoins de ce fait, trouves sur les hauts plateaux du nord, datent des environs du cinquieme siecle avant J.-C. Ce sont essentiellement des statues, un trone sculpte en pierre, des inscriptions ,des autels votifs. La culture ethiopienne de cette periode derive de la culture sudarabique, et s'en distingue. Un processus d'evolution est alors amorce dont l'aboutissement sera l'instauration du pouvoir axoumite aux premiers siecles de l'ere, et la fondation d'Axoum comme capitale d'un royaume dont la duree s'etendra sur un millenaire.On peut diviser en trois periodes le deroulement de l'antiquite ethiopienne: periode sudarabisante, periode intermediaire, et periode axoumite. Deux sites illustrent les etapes de cette evolution: Matara, surtout par sa stratification, et Axoum ou recemment une mission de l'Institut Ethiopien d'Archeologie a mis au jour les vestiges importants d'une demeure seigneuriale (château) de la periode axoumite.Dans ce bilan de l'acquis nouveau en archeologie ethiopienne, nous donnons un bref apercu des recherches en prehistoire et protohistoire. Les faits marquants sont principalement les resultats obtenus par une mission internationale dans la basse vallee de l'Omo (notamment, la decouverte du Paraustralopithecus aethiopicus) et les travaux de J. Chavaillon sur le site de Melka-Kontoure oa se trouvent en stratification quasiment toute la serie des industries de la prehistoire africaine depuis la Pebble Culture.

Modern scholars know a good deal more about the state of the Vulgate Bible text before and during the Carolingian renaissance than in the five centuries after 900. In an essay published in 1984, Laura Light pointed out that very little systematic study had been done on manuscripts of the Bible dating from after the tenth century, and the little work that had been done either dealt mainly with art-historical questions of manuscript production and illumination, or treated the texts primarily as witnesses to pre-900 traditions, rather than placing them within their own historical context. Despite progress in some fields, such as the study of the so-called ‘Paris’ Bible and the biblical correctoria of the thirteenth century, this state of affairs has not fundamentally changed over two decades later. This chapter will give an overview of the textual history of the Latin Bible (in the version which became known later, in the sixteenth century, as the Vulgata ) after the Carolingian renaissance, tracing it through the periods of ecclesiastical and monastic reform, the rise of scholasticism and the first printed Vulgate edition in 1452/1456, until the first critical editions that were brought about by the Renaissance and the Counter-Reformation. The latter led to the text as it would be printed, with modifications, in the Sixto-Clementine edition in 1592, which would remain the standard text of the Latin Bible for centuries. The state of modern research Most of the modern research into the textual transmission of the Vulgate was inspired by the monumental editing project that was undertaken to replace the Sixto-Clementine edition of 1592. Between 1889 and 1954, John Wordsworth and Henry White published their critical edition of the Vulgate New Testament, based on the oldest extant gospel manuscripts, most of which dated from the ninth century. In 1907, Pope Leo VIII commissioned the complete critical edition of the Vulgate Old Testament, and entrusted the project to the Benedictine order; the first volume was issued from the abbey of S Girolamo in Rome in 1926 and the project was completed in 1994. The editing principles of the project were set out by Dom Henri Quentin in his Memoire of 1922. The main aim was to establish the text of the Vulgate as Jerome had conceived it in the fifth century. Thus manuscripts written after c . 900 were considered unreliable witnesses, and for this reason, the more recent manuscript tradition of the Vulgate received only scant attention.

The Latin Bible, c . 900 to the Council of Trent, 1546

This volume examines the development and use of the Bible from late Antiquity to the Reformation, tracing both its geographical and its intellectual journeys from its homelands throughout the Middle East and Mediterranean and into northern Europe. Richard Marsden and E. Ann Matter's volume provides a balanced treatment of eastern and western biblical traditions, highlighting processes of transmission and modes of exegesis among Roman and Orthodox Christians, Jews and Muslims and illuminating the role of the Bible in medieval inter-religious dialogue. Translations into Ethiopic, Slavic, Armenian and Georgian vernaculars, as well as Romance and Germanic, are treated in detail, along with the theme of allegorized spirituality and established forms of glossing. The chapters take the study of Bible history beyond the cloisters of medieval monasteries and ecclesiastical schools to consider the influence of biblical texts on vernacular poetry, prose, drama, law and the visual arts of East and West.

The New Cambridge History of the Bible

The knife, a synecdoche of slaughtering, is an important culinary tool that is charged with the power of religious speech acts and that has a significant semiotic function in Christian-Muslim encounters in Ethiopia. The slaughtering rituals not only transform the neutral natural animal into a sacred cultural food but also invest the meat with an intense aura of disgust among followers of the other faith. The slaughtering narratives continue to manifest themselves in other public signs, namely, in the Cross and the Crescent, on butcheries, and restaurants, for example. These two universal signs are the corollaries of an anterior sign, in other words, the knife that, in the discursive realm of food and religious identity in Ethiopia, implicates the different slaughtering rituals of Orthodox Christians and Muslims.
