Abstract
The authors take a critical language pedagogy approach to examining a 2011 controversy over disparaging comments towards Mexicans made by commentators of the British Broadcasting Corporation’s automotive show Top Gear. In particular, they focus on the characterization of groups and individuals according to their nationality and examine the ubiquity of nationalism and its ability to shape our conception of culture and in turn our understandings of others as members of ‘X national culture.’ The fact that humor is often a justification for national stereotyping and that these stereotypes are also connected to racist discourse are also explored. In the second part of the article, the implications of the stereotyping debate for language classrooms are considered. The authors argue that the controversy itself can be used as a tool for critical engagement that helps students deconstruct the underlying nationalist paradigm in L2 classrooms and build greater intercultural awareness. Examining the role of nationalism in folk theories of language: The case of language complaints in multilingual settings

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors make the case that nationalism comprises one ideological component to folk theories of language and that the principle of nationalist diversity, the compulsion to maintain clear boundaries between nationalized things, appears prominently in at least two ways: (1) in response to dissonance between boundaries of nationalized space and nationalized language; and (2) in reaction to dissonances between the boundaries discerning one linguistic code from another, both situations rely on individuals apprehending linguistic practices as nationalized icons.

Cultural Ways of Learning: Individual Traits or Repertoires of Practice:

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue against the common assumption that regularities are static and that general traits of individuals are attributable categorically to ethnic group membership, and suggest that a cultural-historical approach can be used to help move beyond this assumption by focusing researchers and practitioners' attention on variations in individuals' and groups' histories of engagement in cultural practices.
