There is a great and quickly increasing number of studies on wordand-image relations, but few efforts have been made as yet to make explicit the general problems underlying this kind of research. I see at least two central problems, one methodological and one taxonomic. The former concerns the legitimacy of composing verbal and visual artifacts or transferring methods used in one field to the other field, the identity or difference in the meaning of our critical idiom when it is applied, simultaneously or separately, in both fields, and so on.' The methodological approach requires a well-chosen point of departure; thus Wendy Steiner (1982) picks up the historical "ut pictura poesis" tradition and tries to examine it in the light of modern, especially semiotic, criticism, whereas Manfred Muckenhaupt (1986) examines the current methods of comparing words and images from the point of view of modern linguistics, Gottfried Boehm (1978, 1986) and Oskar Batschmann (1977) from that of modern philosophy (especially aesthetics and hermeneutics). The second general problem is more practical. Facing the tremendous variety of phenomena which belong to word-and-image research, one would like to find some very general categories or headings which would allow a clear and comprehensive classification of all these phe-

Criteria for Describing Word-and-Image Relations

Mit seinen Darstellungen der Geschichte des Publikums hat Richard Butsch gezeigt, dass im Verlauf der Kommunikationsgeschichte die jeweiligen zeitspezifischen Formen und Formate der offentlichen Kommunikation auch das entsprechende Publikum geschaffen haben (Butsch 2008).

Multimodalität – ein universelles Merkmal der Medienkommunikation: Zum Verhältnis von Medienangebot und Medienrezeption

The article presents the material and the results of the study of a political cartoon in the Arabic and French languages. The relevance of this work is due to the description of the precedence in a polycode text in a comparative aspect due to the lack of a sufficient number of scientific papers affecting this issue. The authors offer an overview of the main stages of the study of texts with iconic and verbal components and different types of the component links; and history of the appearance of the terms that nominate this type of text. The text in our research is characterized by the use of semiotic codes, for example, colour and kinesics; it is accompanied by paragraphemic means, which are font variations that go beyond the use of punctuation marks in the standard language, and topographic means, representing various flat layouts of text. The implementation of the described type of text becomes a political discourse, the study of which also relates to the actual research topics of modern linguistics. It should be noted that a political cartoon is always a reflection of the opinion of society or an individual’s reaction to a significant public event, and it is its universal feature, which makes it possible to compare the means and categories of a creolized text of political cartoon in different linguistic cultures/in different languages. The object of the analysis is the creolized text of a political cartoon; the subject of the research is the category of precedence and its features aimed at the realization of the author’s intention in the political cartoon in Arabic and French. An important systemic characteristic of a creolized text is the category of precedence, which in this article corresponds to the category of intertextuality. The authors give examples to examine the use of precedent information at the level of the text and the image and their interconnection. The thorough analysis of the cartoons demonstrates the possibility of decoding a precedent sign in accordance with the type of speech culture of a native speaker. Precedence in a political cartoon can be expressed by a textual or graphic representation of universal human precedent phenomena, civilizational precedent phenomena, onyms and events of a supraregional nature. The formal expression of precedence can also be a symbol. In the conclusion, the article proposes a summary of the results of the study.

Habilitationsschrift Freiburg (Schweiz). Der erste von zwei geplanten Banden widmet sich einer genauen Rekonstruktion von Geschichte und Lebenswelt der Bozner Burgerfamilie Vintler und ihres Aufstiegs im Dienst der Habsburger Landesherrn. Im Zentrum steht dabei Niklaus Vintler, der mit dem Kauf der Burg Runkelstein (1385) und ihrer kunstlerischen Ausstattung seine "quasi-adlige" Stellung demonstriert und den Grundstein fur die spatere offizielle Nobilitierung der Familie legt. Die Studie setzt die Familiengeschichte in den Kontext von Regional- und Landesgeschichte, von Politik, Kultur und Reprasentationsbestrebungen der Habsburger Landesherrn und der Tiroler Fuhrungsschicht. Sie bereitet damit das Terrain vor fur den zweiten Band, der auf dieser Grundlage eine neue Lekture und Deutung der einmaligen profanen Wandmalereien wagt, mit welchen die Vintler die beiden Hauptflugel der Burg und den Neubau des "Sommerhauses" ausstatten liesen.
