TLDR
The Supreme Court decision in Myriad Genetics struck down the patenting of human genomic DNA as mentioned in this paper, which will have a profound impact on genetic testing and medicine, more broadly, in the future.
Abstract
The Supreme Court decision in Myriad Genetics struck down the patenting of human genomic DNA. What will this mean for genetic testing and medicine, more broadly?

Journal ArticleDOI

The role of testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in cancer prevention.

TL;DR: In women with newly diagnosed breast cancer, the identification of a BRCA1/2 mutation can influence the extent of surgery, such as the choice of contralateral mastectomy or breast-conserving surgery, and in families with hereditary breast and/or ovarian cancer where a mutation is found, individuals who test negative for the mutation may be spared increased surveillance and anxiety.
Journal ArticleDOI

Is the Patent System the Way Forward with the CRISPR-Cas 9 Technology?

TL;DR: The central argument is that today the biggest challenge is finding a intermediary way that ensures a balance between providing sufficient openness for the further progress of basic research in CRISPR-Cas 9 and adequate intellectual property rights to incentivise its commercialisation and application.
Journal ArticleDOI

Impact of germline and somatic BRCA1/2 mutations: tumor spectrum and detection platforms.

TL;DR: An urgent need exists for the development of detection platforms that are cost effective and can provide clinicians with conclusive results within a significantly shorter time for the detection of BRCA1/2 mutations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fortune and hindsight: gene patents' muted effect on medical practice.

TL;DR: Traditional gene patents do not appear to have restricted medical practice in the UK, although their effect elsewhere has been more nuanced, and continuing survey data on practitioners' views concerning patents' role in the distribution of newer technologies would be beneficial.
Book ChapterDOI

Patents, ethics, biosafety and regulation using CRISPR technology.

TL;DR: This review chapter provided full comprehensive analysis on the patent, ethics and biosafety regulation with respect to the application of CRISPR technology in mammalian systems and its applicability in patent and technology transfer.
