Modulus measurements in discontinuous reinforced aluminum composites
T.G. Nieh,D.J. Chellman +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a simple and convenient method to overcome the difficulty is by conducting intermittent unloading tests during a conventional tensile test and by measuring the modulus from the unloading curve.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fabricating aluminum matrix composites
TL;DR: Bonding, casting, or plasma spraying as discussed by the authors is a popular technique for plasma spraying and there are decided advantages and disadvantages to each of them, but none of them are suitable for all applications.

Mechanical properties of metal matrix composites
Abstract: The concept of reinforcing a material by the use of a fiber is not a new one. The Egyptian brick layer employed the same principle more than three thousand years ago when straw was incorporated into the bricks. More recent examples of fiber reinforced composites are steel-reinforced concrete, nylon and rayon cord reinforced tires, and fiberglass reinforced plastics. In the last several years considerable progress has been made on new composite structures particularly utilizing boron (on tungsten substrate) fibers in various matrices. Many of these advances have been reviewed recently by P. M. Sinclair1 and by Alexander, Shaver, and Withers.2 An excellent earlier survey is available by Rauch Sutton, and McCreight.3 Boron-reinforced epoxy composites are being fabricated and tested as jet engine components, fuselage components, and even as a complete aircraft wing because of the tremendous gain in experimentally demonstrated properties such as modulus, strength, and fatigue resistance, particularly ...
The role of rapid solidification processing in the fabrication of fiber reinforced metal matrix composites
I. E. Locci,Ronald D. Noebe +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the future potential of rapid solidification processing for composite matrix composites is discussed and the most common methods for forming composite monotapes are the powder cloth, foil/fiber, plasma spray, and arc spray processes.

Environment, application, cost and future
TL;DR: In this article, composites are subject to corrosion, erosion, and thermal condi tions, and will costs continue to decrease as composites become more efficient and cost-effective.
