TL;DR: The conventional wisdom has produced positive results in many public libraries in the United States However, it has also limited the scope of genealogical activity and achievement as mentioned in this paper, as the history of genealogy at the Fort Wayne Public Library (reorganized as the Allen County Public Library in 1980) demonstrates.

Historical Research and Medium-Sized Public Libraries: The Potential.

TL;DR: Most historians fail to take maximum advantage of the resources of public libraries and most librarians do not specifically seek the patronage of historians as discussed by the authors, while major public libraries seem to shy away from trying to cultivate a relationship that would be mutually beneficial.
