Engineering applications of lasers in advanced technologies have grown rapidly in the last decade. The range of these applications include microlithography, cutting of polymers, ceramics, glass and metals, the marking of surface mount devices such as ceramic capacitors and deposition of films including diamond coatings and high temperature superconductive thin films. The potential for excimer lasers in the workplace has been expanding dramatically recently because of two parallel areas of development: increased reliability and performance achieved by the manufacturers, and development of new applications by major research teams. This review discusses both the history and future of excimer technology and applications.

Materials processing with excimer lasers

Nd:YAG lasers with periodical Q-switch have now established themselves in industrial marking. They are mainly used for marking metals, plastics, ceramic and foils. Some marking examples follow. The engraving depth, as well as material interactions dependent on laser parameters are explained with the help of micro samples on metals.

Microscopic Material Interactions By Laser Engraving

Results are reported for the use of a 266 nm frequency quadrupled Nd:YAG ultraviolet laser in the areas of wire stripping of small coaxial type transmission lines and for micro-machining of various materials including copper, glass, polyimide and DuPont TEFLONTM. This new laser is typically run with a 2 KHz repetition rate, 40 ns FWHM pulse and a fluence of about 50 joules/cm2 which makes it possible to micro-machine metals, polymers, glasses and ceramics. The high fluence of this laser allows shielding structures such as Al-MylarTM, Al-KaptonTM or the plated copper used in small coaxial cables to be precisely cut.
