1. The process of inducing hypnosis and the fully developed hypnotic state are a continuum which can be studied satisfactorily only in the novice, and which under such circumstances consists of three stages which shade from one into the next. 2. In the initiation of the process there is a progressive elimination of all channels of sensori-motor communication between the subject and the outside world, with the exception of the channels of communication between the subject and the hypnotist. As a consequence, during this phase the hypnotist becomes temporarily the sole representative of and contact with the outside world. 3. In this essential characteristic, the induction phase parallels the sensori-motor relationships of the infant to the outside world during the earliest phase of infancy, during which the parents play in the psychology of the infant a role almost identical to that of the hypnotist in the mental life of the subject. 4. Instinct and the ego during infancy

HE general character, vividness and number of one's childhood memories depend upon a number of factors. Since the memory of incidents experienced consciously depends upon ideas, and since ideas in turn depend upon language, it is reasonable to suppose that the extent of the child's language development determines, in part at least, the range and variety of his memories. As may be observed from the results given below, practically every memory, with the possible exception of one or two, dates back to a period when elementary language habits were rather firmly established. Although it would be interesting and highly instructive to ascertain the extent of the correlation between language development and childhood memories, no information is at present available which would permit such a correlation. It would be extremely difficult to obtain valid information as to the exact age at which the subjects began to use language and the rate at which new language habits were established. A second factor, and one which is intimately related to language, is intelligence. One who is distinctly handicapped as to his intellectual equipment is limited as to his range of experience and hence the variety and number of his memories. Whether this holds for

Resume L'EFFET DE L'HYPNOSE SUR LE RAPPEL TRES RETARDE Douze sujets en se rappelant 92 morceaux de prose ou de poesie appris un an ou plus auparavant, ont pu reproduire en moyenne 67 pour cent de plus dans la transe que dans l'etat de reveil, etablissant ainsi l'hypermnesie pour ce type de chose dans l'etat de transe. Les directions donnees aux sujets dans l'etat de transe contenaient une suggestion sur un meilleur rappel, laquelle, a part la transe, pourraient ětre en partie responsables des grandes differences obtenues. On a trouve un effet de pratique de 14 pour cent, l'accroissement du second etat sur le premier, bien qu'un ordre contrebalance a empěche celui-ci d'influer sur les resultats finals. On a trouve que les sujets ont improvise la poesie ou leur memoire n'a pas suffi, plus souvent dans l'etat de transe. On suggere des explications possibles de la difference de ces resultats en apparence de ceux obtenus par d'autres investigateurs.
