Goa is often referred to as a classic example of the evils of tourism development, yet there is relatively little substantive evidence against which to assess this claim.
The study also examines the motivations, socio-demographic profiles, consumption patterns and image of the destination that the tourist holds. The findings can be utilized for formulating strategies to attract, maintain and retain more number of Maharashtrian tourists visiting Goa.
The research findings prove that tourism development is ensuring the environmental and economic sustainability of tourist destinations of Goa.
Thus, sustainable development is crucial to the continued welfare of the state, and particularly within the reach of economic drivers such as tourism in Goa.
Hence, the tourist destinations should have the right amenities and facilities.
With data of about 1869 hotels belonging to 113 tourist districts, results support the hypothesis and partially the theory of tourist districts.
It will also be argued that although the spatiality of the tourism critique points to its heterogeneity, it is precisely because there are multiple constructions of 'Goa' and 'Goan identity' that the discourse constitutes its object, Goa.
The authors believe that the methodologies used, and the country-specific results obtained, are broadly applicable in marketing and tourist public strategies.
