This provides a much needed framework for addressing long standing questions in community ecology as well as the recent debate on community neutrality.
It does not appear to be a focus of metapopulation efforts in ecology.
We propose that such an indicator can be developed from the theory of species gradients in community ecology.

This is due mainly to the fact that the topic of ecology does not play a role in the debate about shrinkage and population decreases.
Our findings suggest how species-specific models in applied ecology can be developed to improve the predictive power of SDMs.
This fact does not mean that community ecology is a weak science; in fact, it is the locus of exciting advances, with growing mechanistic understanding of causes, patterns, and processes.
By extending the list and by developing better models for how traits influence species distributions and interactions, a strong foundation of basic ecology can be established, with many practical applications.
