What are the factors influencing the increasing cases of antimicrobial resistance against Pulmonary tuberculosis in India?5 answersThe increasing cases of antimicrobial resistance against Pulmonary tuberculosis in India are influenced by several factors. These include repeated exposure to anti-TB drugs, previous treatment failure, consumption of alcohol, high fasting blood sugar levels, and the number of prior courses of anti-tuberculosis treatment (ATT) taken. Improper implementation of TB management guidelines and high rates of patient defaults also contribute to the development of drug-resistant TB. Additionally, age, gender, HIV status, nature of TB, smoking, and alcohol consumption are associated with TB prevalence, while prior history of TB infection, previous household exposure, smoking, and alcohol consumption are associated with multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). The emergence and spread of MDR-TB is also influenced by factors such as age, gender, pattern of resistance, and high random blood sugar levels. Furthermore, the prevalence of FQs resistance among drug-sensitive and MDR-TB isolates is high in India, highlighting the need for routine drug susceptibility testing.
What is the burden of tuberculosis in India?5 answersThe burden of tuberculosis in India has been a major public health problem, with high incidence, prevalence, and mortality rates. Studies have shown that overall incidence, prevalence, death, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) lost due to tuberculosis have decreased from 1990 to 2019. However, tuberculosis still remains a significant cause of untimely deaths, especially in developing countries like India. The burden of tuberculosis is higher among males compared to females, and it affects all age groups, with higher mortality in older age groups. The COVID-19 pandemic has further impacted tuberculosis case reporting in India, leading to a significant difference between reported cases and expected cases in the absence of the pandemic. These findings highlight the need for continued efforts in tuberculosis control and interventions to accelerate case finding and notification in India.
