Abstract: Due to a general misunderstanding of de Bary’s (1879) original definition, there has been much confusion during the past century regarding the term “symbiosis” and its subcategories. Fortunately, this situation now seems to have been corrected. Many texts and standard reference works, such as that edited by Henry (1966), now correctly consider symbiosis simply to mean a “living together,” as originally defined by de Bary. Under this allinclusive heading are grouped the three major subdivisions of “mutualism,” “commensalism,” and “parasitism ”(Allee et al., 1949; Davenport, 1955; Noble and Noble, 1964; Henry, 1966).
