TL;DR: An adult house mouse infected with an alveolar hydatid of Echinococcus multilocularis was trapped in the cellar of an inhabited house in a small village in Auvergne (France) and harboured a young hepatic larval cyst, indicating the presence of infective eggs of the parasite inside the house and outbuildings.
Abstract: An adult house mouse infected with an alveolar hydatid of Echinococcus multilocularis was trapped in the cellar of an inhabited house in a small village in Auvergne (France) where 3 human cases of alveolar hydatid disease had been diagnosed. The rodent harboured a young hepatic larval cyst. This indicated the presence of infective eggs of the parasite inside the house and outbuildings, an important observation concerning the circulation of the parasite in a domestic environment.

Abstract: On the basis of a ten year study, the authors provide the present knowledge concerning the epidemiology of alveolar hydatid disease in France. The various hosts involved in the life-cycle of the parasite are enumerated. Six small rodent species act as natural intermediate hosts with marked differences in susceptibility. The definitive hosts are: i) wild foxes; 30 per cent of them are found parasitized in hyperendemic areas; ii) domestic carnivores especially dogs and to a lesser extent cats. Until the present work, the presence of infected domestic dogs and cats was not demonstrated in France. In conclusion, dogs seem to play an important role in the human contamination by the parasite. Consequently simple prophylactic measures are recommended.

TL;DR: The authors review the laboratory techniques used for diagnosis of echinococcosis (IFL, IHA, IEP, ES, ELISA) with emphasis on the value and standardization of the antigens utilized.
Abstract: The authors review the laboratory techniques used for diagnosis of echinococcosis (IFL, IHA, IEP, ES, ELISA) with emphasis on the value and standardization of the antigens utilized. The specificity of these tests makes it possible to differentiate hydatidosis from alveolar hydatid disease.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors assessed the epidemic situation in the area and assessed the early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the disease and the improvement of the material basis of the Centre for alveococcosis control.
Abstract: : The epidemic situation in the area is assessed. In 1988, 3587 persons have been examined for alveococcosis, using immunological tests. In 322 of them (9%) indirect hemagglutination tests turned out to be positive. Successful prevention of alveococcosis in the area is associated with complex measures on the early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the disease and the improvement of the material basis of the Centre for alveococcosis control.
