TL;DR: In this article, a circulation valve for use in the testing of an oil well wherein the circulation valve may be reclosed by application of well annulus pressure to allow a subsequent treating or testing program is presented.
Abstract: Disclosed is a circulation valve for use in the testing of an oil well wherein the circulation valve may be reclosed by application of well annulus pressure to allow a subsequent treating or testing program. A spring means is subjected to well annulus pressure on two ends of a volume of fluid. The volume of fluid is divided by a dividing means which includes pressure relief means such that fluid on one side of the dividing means is either higher or lower than the well annulus pressure. This different pressure is applied to one set of a piston means, and the other side of the piston means is subject to well annulus pressure such that movement of the piston means may be controlled by changing the well annulus pressure. An indexing means is additionally disclosed which controls opening of the circulation valve after a selected number of piston means movements, and which closes the circulation valve upon a selected movement of said piston means when the circulation valve is in the open condition.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe an apparatus and its method of operation for an oil well valve having a self adjusting liquid spring responsive to changes in pressure in the well annulus.
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus and its method of operation for an oil well valve having a self adjusting liquid spring responsive to changes in pressure in the well annulus. The valve has a liquid spring contained in a spring chamber divided by a piston means which moves responsive to annulus pressure changes to operate the valve. The piston means includes a metering means to meter liquid from one side of the piston to the other as the volume of the liquid changes due to pressure and temperature changes. The piston means moves responsive to pressure changes in the well annulus which pressure changes are applied to the well annulus at a rate faster than the metering means may relieve the changes. A mechanical spring means in conjunction with the metering means returns the piston means to its original position after a predetermined time. Bypass means is additionally disclosed which bypasses the metering means and may be arranged such that piston means movement occurs on either pressure increases or pressure decreases in the well annulus.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method and apparatus for installing a large diameter pipe, in the range of 30 inches diameter, for spanning an obstacle, such as a river, along an invert arcuate underground path is described.
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for installing a large diameter pipe--in the range of 30 inches diameter--for spanning an obstacle, such as a river, along an invert arcuate underground path. An inclined drill rig, having a mud supply system and power pod, includes an angularly inclined ramp and driven car for crowding, without rotation, a pipe either pre-bent to a preselected and constant radius of curvature or a straight pipe into the ground. The pipe at its head includes an articulated drill head, which by appropriate articulation, assures placement of the pipe along a radius of curvature equal to the pre-bent radius of curvature of the pipe. The articulated drilling head includes a hydraulic system for articulating and driving the cutting head and pumping mud and tailing from the pipe path. Two discrete mud systems are used. The first mud system is utilized to entrain and carry away cuttings. The second mud system is combined with a flared skirt about the point of drill head articulation to provide a clean and high lubricity annulus of mud about the advancing drill string. The density of the first mud system can be used to vary the drill string mass, while the density of this second mud system can be used to vary the density of the fluid in which the drill string is buoyantly supported.

TL;DR: In this article, an air lift system for large diameter borehole drilling is described, which is applicable in drilling operations where a vertical pilot hole is drilled below the point to which the borehole will later be enlarged and a slant hole is inserted obliquely to intersect the pilot hole near its nether position.
Abstract: An air lift system for large diameter borehole drilling is disclosed. The system is applicable in drilling operations where a vertical pilot hole is drilled below the point to which the borehole will later be enlarged and a slant hole is drilled obliquely to intersect the pilot hole near its nether position. During the drilling operation, the circulation system pumps drilling fluid down the annulus of the borehole to cool the cutterhead and to mix with the cuttings. The drilling fluid carrying the cuttings then moves down the pilot hole and up through the slant hole. A plenum is located in the slant hole to assist in the lifting of the drilling fluid. The plenum includes a tapered transition pipe, a tapered discharge horn, and an air diffusion ring located at the throat of the discharge horn. The diffusion ring is utilized to inject outside air into the drilling fluid passing therethrough. The discharge horn is shaped to enable the discharge velocity of the drilling fluid passing through the discharge horn to be constant over the entire length thereof.

TL;DR: In this paper, an inner and outer casing are partially imbedded in the ground submerged in the water and in concentric relationship with one another, and the annulus formed between said inner and inner casing is filled with unconsolidated sand, while the inner casing was filled with reinforcing material and concrete to form the column.
Abstract: This invention comprises a technique for constructing concrete foundation columns in underwater locations, wherein the steel casing members used to form the columns may be recovered for subsequent re-use. In the technique, an inner and outer casing are partially imbedded in the ground submerged in the water and in concentric relationship with one another. The annulus formed between said inner and outer casing is filled with unconsolidated sand, while the inner casing is filled with reinforcing material and concrete to form the column. The inner casing is then vibrated at a suitable frequency to reduce the friction between it and the sand and concrete, whereby the inner casing may then be drawn upwardly and from between said concrete and the sand. The sand will then support the concrete until after said concrete has hardened, whereupon the outer casing may then be removed, either by vibration or by conventional techniques.

TL;DR: In this paper, a special plug, made in accordance with the invention, is placed in the end of a tubing string, and the string run dry into the borehole with the lower end of the string terminating in proximity of the perforations.
Abstract: Apparatus for completing a wellbore which has a hydrocarbon containing formation located downhole therein and wherein the well is perforated and filled with mud. A special plug, made in accordance with the invention, is placed in the end of a tubing string, and the string run dry into the borehole with the lower end of the string terminating in proximity of the perforations. The annulus is packed off and a weight dropped down through the string. The weight impacts against a special valve contained within the plug, thereby upsetting a valve element. This action communicates the interior of the string with the borehole, whereupon the lower borehole or bottomhole pressure is equalized across the plug, and the plug and weight fall from the end of the string and to the bottom of the borehole. The string is opened to ambient which allows flow to occur in order to clean out the well, and thereafter the string is connected to a gathering system.

TL;DR: In this paper, the inner pipe and outer pipe are welded to a common flange and formed an annulus for the circulation of a heating or cooling medium to control the temperature of the fluid in the pipe.
Abstract: The inner pipe (5) and outer pipe (6) are welded to a common flange (1) and form an annulus (13) for the circulation of a heating or cooling medium to control the temperature of the fluid in the pipe (5). A pair of flanges (1) are held together by clamping rings (7) and the joint is sealed by a gasket (8). The fluid in the annulus (13) flows across the joint through the holes (2) which are aligned with holes in the gasket (8). The gasket (8) has annular grooves (10) which are connected by radial slots to its outer edge. Any fluid leaking from the central pipe (5) or from the annulus (13) flows into the annular grooves (10) and into the radial slots so that neither fluid contaminates the other.

TL;DR: In this article, a two-part casing and an internal rotor with a pseudo-fluid material between the casing and rotor is described, where the internal face of the rotor has a succession of concave pockets, which are substantially egg-shaped.
Abstract: A centrifugal clutch for mechanical transmission which includes a two-part casing and an internal rotor with a pseudo-fluid, material between the casing and rotor, wherein a face of the rotor opposite a face of the casing has a succession of grooves or waves which are substantially sinu-soidally shaped in a peripheral direction, and wherein each internal face of the casing has a succession of concave pockets, which are substantially egg-shaped, as formed by an internal section of an egg-shell cut lengthwise through the egg, with the wider end of the egg cut off to a radius which will conform to the inside diameter of the casing, and with the narrower end of the egg cut off to a radius which will conform to the outside diameter of an internal boss within the casing. The two parts of the casing are joined together to form an annulus and the areas separating the pockets are chamfered adjacent the edges of the pockets and are flat or convex between the chamfered portions. The shape of the pockets enables the pseudo-fluid material to flow more readily from pocket-to-pocket and thereby to transfer heat from the material to the casing. To prevent racheting, there are an odd number of pockets in the casing and an even number of waves in the rotor or vice versa.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new technique reduces unwanted voids in annular sand packs surrounding inclinometer casings installed in boreholes, which involves generating a quick condition in the annulus sand due to induced upward water seepage.
Abstract: A new technique reduces unwanted voids in annular sand packs surrounding inclinometer casings installed in boreholes. The technique involves generating a quick condition in the annulus sand due to induced upward water seepage. Simple end fittings direct water down the inside of the casing, out at the bottom in an upward direction, and through the annulus to the surface. Present data indicate that shovel-placed annular sand packs decrease in volume by about 10 percent after becoming quick, causing the inclinometer casing to become firmly seated in the borehole.
