TL;DR: In this paper, a bimetal flange connector is proposed for connecting components of a piping system such as fittings or pipe in which a hub or preformed inset (12) of a first metal material compatible with the piping system components (15) enabling welding, brazing or other method to be utilized in connecting the inset(12) to the pipe component.
Abstract: A bimetal flange connector (10) for connecting components (15) of a piping system such as fittings or pipe in which the bimetal flange connector (10) has a hub or preformed inset (12) of a first metal material compatible with the piping system components (15) enabling welding, brazing or other method to be utilized in connecting the inset (12) to the piping system component. The bimetal flange connector (10) has a rim (14) of a second metal material castable directly onto said inset (12). The rim (14) is retained on the inset (12) by a shrink fit on cooling, a metallurgical bond, a preformed retainer configuration of the inset or a combination of the foregoing. For certain combinations, of low carbon inset material and high carbon rim material, the inset (12) is prepared for the cast-on rim (14) by the interposition of a boundary layer (45) of carbon migration inhibiting material to prevent carbon migration from the cast-on rim (14) from adversely affecting the properties of the inset (12 ). The bimetal flange connector (10) allows the inset (12) to be of one composition with desirable characteristics for connecting to a piping system component (15) and the rim (14) to be of a second material with desirable characteristics for mechanical connection to a mating flange, one preferred embodiment employing a stainless steel inset (12), a ductile iron rim (14) and an interposed chromium boundary layer (45) at the interface juncture of rim and inset.

TL;DR: In this paper, a part, formed into a concentric circular wave shape, in a disc-shaped bimetal is used for open-close operation of a flow line according to fluid temperature.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To both obtain strong operating power and provide a sharp response to an ambient temperature change in a bimetal valve for performing the open-close operation of a flow line according to fluid temperature, by providing a part, formed into a concentric circular wave shape, in a disc-shaped bimetal. CONSTITUTION:When high temperature fluid is existent in a valve chamber 4, a bimetal 20 is curved to compress a coil spring 19 and depress a valve stem 13, then a valve head of a valve body 12 closes a valve port 9. If fluid temperature is lowered, the bimetal 20 becomes flat to open the valve port 9. Then the fluid in the valve chamber 4 passes through lateral and longitudinal holes in a valve seat member 8 to flow from the valve port 9 to an outlet 10. If temperature of fluid flowing into the valve chamber 4 from an inlet 6 rises, the valve is opened by the bimetal 20. Said bimetal 20, being formed in a disc shape, can both display strong operating power and provide the large displacement of a valve stem B. While the bimetal 20, being shaped in a waveform, can promptly perform the transfer operation of heat with fluid in the surroundings thus to provide a sharp response to a temperature change.

TL;DR: In this article, a heat responsive element such as a bimetal switch is used to prevent the generation of high surge voltage, and thereby obviate the insulation breakdown of a stabilizer or the like.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of high surge voltage, and thereby obviate the insulation breakdown of a stabilizer or the like, by using a heat responsive element such as a bimetal switch which is usually opened and which operates by discharge, and by charging the outer tube with a gas at a relatively low pressure. CONSTITUTION:If a high-pressure sodium lamp is connected to a power source by placing a stabilizer between them, current flows through a closed circuit consisting of a stabilizer, a metallic cap 21, a stem lead 20, a lead 26, a lead 24, a bimetal 4, a contact 23, a lead 17, a supporting frame 14, a stem lead 19, a metallic cap 21 and the stabilizer. A bimetal 4 operates by heat produced by the discharge between the contacts 22 and 23, the connection between the contacts 22 and 23 is cut off, and a lamp is lit by the discharge between the electrode 2 and 3. Since a gap is charged within an outer tube 7, a part of surge-voltage energy, which is generated by the operation of the bimetal 4, is consumed by the discharge between the contacts 22 and 23.

TL;DR: In this article, an I-shaped frame made of a heat-resistant insulating material and mounting on the frame a plurality of thermoresponsive elements formed of bimetal pieces and a filament is presented.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To facilitate a setting of the contact pressure of a bimetal switch, by providing within an outer tube of a discharge lamp an I-shaped frame made of a heat-resistant insulating material and mounting on the frame a plurality of thermoresponsive elements formed of bimetal pieces and a filament. CONSTITUTION:Within an outer tube 11 of a metal halide lamp or the like, there are arranged a luminous tube 1 as well as an I-shaped frame 26 having a base part 26a and a pair of arm parts 26b, 26c. On the frame 26, there are mounted the first and second bimetal switches 17, 18, which are formed of bimetal pieces 17b, 18b, movable contacts 17c, 18c and fixed contacts 17d, 18d respectively, and a heating filament 21. The frame 26 is supported by a support frame 12 through a mounting plate 27. Thus, when the contact pressure is adjusted so as to make the actuation time of the bimetal switch 17 shorter than that of the bimetal switch 18, its adjustment work can be performed simply and surely. In addition, the filament 21 can be retained at a fixed position. Consequently, the fabrication of a discharge lamp has been made easier.

TL;DR: In this paper, the spring of a bimetal disc is thermally deformed to open and close the flow path with the material and thus obtaining proper inhanced force in accordance with the temperature.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To permit smooth and reliable operation without sacrifice of the sealing property by forming the spring of a bimetal disc which is thermally deformed to open and close the flow path with the bimetal material and thus obtaining proper inhanced force in accordance with the temperature. CONSTITUTION:A housing 6 is formed with first and second ports 2 and 3 and flow paths 4 and 5 therefrom and both the paths 4 and 5 are communicated by a space 8 formed in a body 7. A bimetal disc 9 provided in the space 8 is deformed in accordance with the temperature to be brought into close contact with an elastic seal 11 for closing the flow path 4. A bimetal spring 10 which urges the disc 9 has a plurality of arms 14 projecting from a central part 13. With temperature increase these arms are contracted to weaken the enhanced force so as to prevent fixing of the disc 9 and seal 11 to each other, while with temperature reduction they are extended to make up for the reduction of the elasticity of the seal 11. Thus, the flow path can be smoothly and reliably opened and closed either at the time of closure at a high temperature or at the time of opening at a low temperature.

TL;DR: In this paper, a circuit breaker suitable for use on both AC and DC circuits includes a magnetically permeable core surrounding a current carrying conductor of the circuit breaker, which is thermally coupled to the core such that induction heating of the core due to overload AC current flowing through the conductor is operative to deflect the bimetal and actuate a trip device.
Abstract: A circuit breaker suitable for use on both AC and DC circuits includes a magnetically permeable core surrounding a current carrying conductor of the circuit breaker. A bimetal member is thermally coupled to the core such that induction heating of the core due to overload AC current flowing through the conductor is operative to deflect the bimetal and actuate a trip device. The circuit breaker also includes a pair of braided copper shunts connected between the conductor and the bimetal such that resistive heating of the conductor due to overload DC current flow through the breaker will cause the bimetal to deflect and actuate a trip device. The bimetal is mechanically isolated from the conductor such that relative movement therebetween will not affect thermal calibration of the circuit breaker.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To maintain the amount of magnetic flux affecting on the focusing characteristics at a constant level, by forming a gap containing a bimetal at a part of a magnetic path which embraces a permanent magnet and changing the gap in accordance with temperature. CONSTITUTION:Each face of an annular permanent magnet 1 in a focusing magnet device is provided with a magnetic path member 10 consisting of a bimetal, which is formed by a magnetic metal with a low thermal expansion coefficient and containing iron and nickel as main components and a metal bonded to the magnetic metal and having a high thermal expansion coefficient, in such a manner that the magnetic metal is brought into contact with the permanent magnet 1. The upper peripheral edge of the magnetic path member 10 terminates in an outwardly flared portion 14 so as to make a gap between the magnet 1 and magnetic path member 10. The outwardly flared portion 14 defines a number of a notches 15. The magnetic resistance of the magnetic path can be changed by using temperature deformations of the bimetal. It is therefore possible to maintain the amount of the magnetic flux affecting on the focusing characteristics at a constant level, irrespective of changes in temperature.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose to prevent the fusing between each contact of the bimetal piece and the contact piece of a heat-responsive element by fixing the end of the Bimetal Piece and the Contact Piece on a base plate; these two pieces stand opposite and touch each other.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable the prevention of the fusing between each contact of the bimetal piece and the contact piece of a heat-responsive element, by fixing the end of the bimetal piece and the contact piece on a base plate; these two pieces stand opposite and touch each other. CONSTITUTION:When a metal vapor discharge lamp with a built-in starter is supplied with power source, the self-heating of a heat-operated device 18 and the heat of a heating filament 22 bring about the operation of the heat-operated device 18, which initiates the main discharge between main electrodes to light the lamp. Since the end of a bimetal piece 18b and a contact piece 18d which make up the heat- responsive device 18 is bent to form a right angle and is fixed to a base plate 24, the bimetal piece 18b and the contact piece 18d can be held firmly and the contact pressure between these two pieces can be easily adjusted. In addition, since each part of the surface of the bimetal piece 18b and the contact piece 18d are made in contact with each other, the local wear and the fusing of contact materials due to small discharge between contacts, such as a movable contact 18c and a fixed contact 18e, can be obviated.

Abstract: PURPOSE:In a discharging lamp where a bimetal and a ballast are contained in an outer tube, to achieve the reliable lighting by employing a bimetal having specific open function characteristic thereby setting up a constant time elasping unitl the start of opening function. CONSTITUTION:A ballast 3 and a bimetal switch 4 together with a light emitting tube 2 are contained in an outer tube. The bimetal switch 4 has such characteristic as to perform the opening, function within 1.5-40sec through self heating, when supplying the current two times of the lamp starting current in N2 gas environment of 300 To. Since the opening function is performed through self heating even if there is fluctuation due to the radiation heat from the ballast 3, heat transmitted from the bimetal through the supporting member, gas convection, etc., the arc discharging is produced reliably in the light emitting tube, resulting in stable lighting.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable a proximity conductor to be smoothly separated from an emission tube after the burning of a lamp, by inserting the end of the proximity conductor, the other end of which is supported by a bimetal piece, into a supporting hole of a holder supporting the emission tube, with some space within the hole. CONSTITUTION:Arc discharge is developed between main electrodes 4a and 4b. On a stable burning of a lamp being achieved, the temperature of an emission tube 3 rises, and a bimetal switch 6 is kept opened by the heat of the emission tube 3. On the other hand, a bimetal piece 18 of a proximity conductor 5 also is heated by the heat of the emission tube 3 and is bent, thereby the conductor 5 being separated from the emission tube 3. Since the upper end of the conductor 5 is bent into a crank form, and is inserted in a supporting hole 20 provided in a holder 11a with a space within the hole 20, the bending of the bimetal piece 18 causes the conductor 5 to rotate within the supporting hole 20. Consequently, no unnatural backward stress is developed in the proximity conductor 5.
