TL;DR: In this article, a method for manufacturing a turbine rotor assembly from dissimilar materials includes the step of preforming a turbine disc of powdered metal by direct hot isostatic pressing; machining the OD of the disc rim to an exact dimension; prefabricating a ring of airfoil elements having a circular rim with a machined ID therein fit to the turbine disc; sealing joint lines on side surfaces of the joined parts to create a vacuum at the interface with a high melt temperature sealant.
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a turbine rotor assembly from dissimilar materials includes the step of preforming a turbine disc of powdered metal by direct hot isostatic pressing; machining the OD of the disc rim to an exact dimension; prefabricating a ring of airfoil elements having a circular rim with a machined ID therein fit to the OD of the turbine disc; sealing joint lines on side surfaces of the joined parts to create a vacuum at the interface with a high melt temperature sealant; thereafter diffusion bonding the joined and sealed parts by hot isostatically pressing them at temperatures in excess of 1500° F. and under fluid pressure directly applied to the parts in excess of 1000 psi to press the ring ID into intimate contact with the OD of the disc until the dissimilar materials are diffusion bonded to form a high strength butt joint therebetween.

TL;DR: In this paper, the virtues of fracture mechanics fatigue analysis of welded joints are outlined and the stress intensity factors for toe and root cracks as calculated by the finite element method for cruciform joint are presented.
Abstract: The virtues of fracture mechanics fatigue analysis of welded joints are outlined. The stress intensity factors for toe and root cracks as calculated by the finite element method for cruciform joint is presented. Crack growth data for welds in steel to NVE 36 is presented, and applied in an analysis of transverse, load-carrying welds. From this, the fatigue strength of misaligned joints is calculated. Measurements of eccentricity of cruciform joints in offshore structures is presented, and acceptance criteria for eccentricity and root defects are discussed in light of these findings.

TL;DR: In this paper, a one-step easy-open composite container for dough products and the like, together with a method and apparatus for forming the same, are disclosed, which composite container includes a fibrous body wall layer having an unbonded helical butt joint, an impervious inner liner layer that is folded to define an expansible folded portion that extends helically the length of the container opposite the helical Butt joint, and an outer label layer wound helically in adhesively-bonded relation upon the body wall across the butt joint.
Abstract: A one-step easy-open composite container for dough products and the like, together with a method and apparatus for forming the same, are disclosed, which composite container includes a fibrous body wall layer having an unbonded helical butt joint, an impervious inner liner layer that is folded to define an expansible folded portion that extends helically the length of the container opposite the helical butt joint, an outer label layer wound helically in adhesively-bonded relation upon the body wall across the butt joint, and at least one end closure member closing one end of the body wall-label laminate, characterized in that the overlapping edge of the outer label layer is precut--prior to winding on the body wall layer--by a tab cut which is arranged at an acute angle relative to the separation line of end cut in laterally spaced relation to the helical butt joint. Consequently, when the pull tab portion defined by the tab cut is pulled to partially tear the label from the container, the body wall butt joint is exposed and is automatically expanded by the product packaged in the container to open the inner liner layer folded portion along the butt joint.

TL;DR: In this article, a measure and an understanding of the damping in high-strength friction-grip bolted joints were obtained. Buttons were examined on four plate surfaces, including galvanized, inorganic zinc silicate, urethane chromate primer, and mill scale.
Abstract: The object of the work reported in this paper is to obtain a measure and an understanding of the damping in high-strength friction-grip bolted joints. Static tests to determine the coefficient of friction and cyclic tests to determine the amount of damping in symmetrical double-coverplated butt joints are described. Four plate surfaces were examined, i.e., galvanized, inorganic zinc silicate, urethane chromate primer, and mill scale. An energy loss relationship was found for each surface type. At the working load levels, the damping factors ranged from 5% to 12%, and the energy losses, after early variations, tended to stable values with increasing numbers of cycles. Suggestions on improvements to increase joint damping are given.

TL;DR: The sealing ring of resilient material is for horizontal joints between upper and lower concrete elements of the access shaft for sewers as mentioned in this paper, where the overlapping ends of the steel ring may be held together by a guide sleeve rigidly connected to one end of the sealing ring eg by welding or soldering.
Abstract: The sealing ring of resilient material is for horizontal joints between upper and lower concrete elements of the access shaft for sewers A reinforcing split steel ring has the ends overlapping and displaceable relative to each other within the sealing ring The overlapping ends of the steel ring may be held together by a guide sleeve (6) rigidly connected to one end of the steel ring eg by welding or soldering The guide sleeve is pref made from a band of metal which is bent into a tube with a butt joint between its longitudinal edges The steel ring is of variable length within the sealing ring, so that in spite of dimensional tolerances the ring always abuts against the guide sloping surface of the lower shaft element

TL;DR: In this paper, the length of the wire projecting downwards from the nozzle is initially longer than the thickness of the plates, and becomes shorter as the number of deposited layers increases, and as the length decreases the voltage fed to the nozzle the wire speed; and the speed of welding along the gap are all decreased.
Abstract: The length of the wire projecting downwards from the nozzle is initially longer than the thickness of the plates, and becomes shorter as the number of deposited layers increases. As the length decreases the voltage fed to nozzle the wire speed; and the speed of welding along the gap are all decreased. Productivity is increased without the need to adjust the height of nozzle after each pass; and only a simple butt joint need be used, i.e. V- or X- butt joints are not necessary.

Abstract: The approach rate of several parts to be flash welded simultaneously is automatically controlled by measuring the flash welding current densities of the butt joints and converting them into dc voltages The max voltage is compared with a desired voltage setting and any deviation is used to control the approach rate of the butt joints Several butt joints of large area can thus be welded simultaneously with a high dynamic stability The mfrg costs are reduced by a factor of 18, compared with manual arc welding The labour productivity rises by a factor of 70 and the quality of the welded articles is improved
