TL;DR: In this article, cyclic acid anhydrides such as succinic or citraconic anhydride have been used to modify wool with zinc or cadmium acetate in hot dimethylformamide.
Abstract: Modification of wool by cyclic acid anhydrides such as succinic or citraconic anhydride introduces new carhoxyl groups. Subsequent reaction of the modified wool with zinc or cadmium acetate in hot dimethylformamide further increases fabric weight by over 15% and retards felting shrinkage. Under similar conditions, neither zinc chloride nor calcium acetate is effective. A possible explanation of these effects is offered.
