TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a protective vest having a collar or neck guard intended for use with helmets and, optionally, with shoulder pads or harnesses, of the types worn by players in contact sports.
Abstract: Disclosed is a protective vest having a collar or neck guard intended for use with helmets and, optionally, with shoulder pads or harnesses, of the types worn by players in contact sports. The protective vest has a flexible body with shoulder portions between chest and back panels. Surrounding an opening for receiving a player's neck is a raised collar, integrally formed with the body, which has an upper ring-like surface for contacting the bottom edge of the player's helmet. When contacted by the player's helmet, the collar, formed of resilient material, is placed in energy-absorbing compression. Also, the chest and back panels surrounding the collar, also being made of resilient material, are placed in a tension and compression loading, to further aid in absorbing the loading applied to the collar. The body portion and, particularly, the chest and neck panels are pliable so as to conform to the topography of the player's upper torso and to frictionally engage the player's body and any clothing in contact with the player's body underneath the protective vest, so as to provide the frictional engagement necessary for efficient energy absorption.

TL;DR: In this paper, a flexible drilling collar made up of a series of short drill string sections interconnected by universal joints is used for rotary drilling in an oil and/or gas well.
Abstract: A method and associated apparatus for lateral drilling in an oil and/or gas well involving either stopping the drilling or temporarily cementing in a plug in the existing well bore at the desired location for deviation. A tight radius of curvature is then rotary drilled by use of a flexible drilling collar made up of a series of short drill string sections interconnected by universal joints that terminate within an eccentric collar on the final drill string section. The eccentric collar is equipped with a sidewall engaging means to hold the eccentric collar from rotating during rotary drilling. A flexible collar (e.g., ball and socket) extending outwardly and downwardly from the far end of the final drill string section passing through the eccentric collar connects to a drill bit collar and rotary drill bit. A stabilizer/reamer of essentially the same size or slightly larger diameter than the drill bit surrounds the drill bit collar, thus producing a fulcrum for tilting the drill bit perpendicular to the well bore. The eccentric collar on the last drill string section that engages the well bore forces the deflection of the drill bit about the fulcrum and holds this orientation as the rotating drill proceeds forward. Such a technique can achieve a twelve foot radius of curvature in an existing oil or gas well bore for establishing lateral drain holes essentially horizontal to the otherwise vertical well bore.

TL;DR: In this article, the peak loads encountered when a composite assembly of workpieces is secured with a swaged collar fastener, by disposing cavities in the cylindrical wall of the fastener collar to receive material flow during the swaging operation, were determined.
Abstract: Predetermined limits are attained for the peak loads encountered when a composite assembly of workpieces is secured with a swaged collar fastener, by disposing cavities in the cylindrical wall of the fastener collar to receive material flow during the swaging operation. Rotation between the collar and pin of the fastener is precluded by disposing abutting portions on the pin, which interface against the swaged material of the collar. Fastener cost reductions are achieved by decreasing the volume of a post-swage scrap portion on the pin and by concurrently fabricating grooves thereon with a rolling die, for various functional purposes. Swaging tool malfunction is avoided by eliminating land surfaces adjacent to grooves on the pin through which pull is applied thereto with the tool.

TL;DR: An intraocular lens which is compressible to fit through a small ocular incision into the eye and whose refractive power is adjustable once the inserted lens has been reformed and remedially positioned in the eye is described in this paper.
Abstract: An intraocular lens which is compressible to fit through a small ocular incision into the eye and whose refractive power is adjustable once the inserted lens has been reformed and remedially positioned in the eye. The lens includes a deformable soft optic, a translucent collar encircling the soft optic and attached to it at fixed spaced points, and haptics attached to the collar for remedially positioning the soft optic in the eye. The collar has a separation or break to define two collar arms. When the collar is compressed the arms slide relative to one another to narrow the collar, and the compressed lens can then be inserted in the eye. Once in the eye the collar is released and the arms reformed together to form a rigid circle supporting the soft optic. The soft optic is formed by a transparent bag having a thickened perimeter and filled with a transparent fluid. When the lens is in place in the eye, a fine needle can be inserted into the eye and into the bag perimeter. The amount of fluid in the bag is altered through the needle and the refractive power of the soft optic thereby adjusted as needed.

TL;DR: In this article, a conveyor roller comprises a steel roller tube fitted with end cap assemblies incorporating bearings for rotatably mounting the roller tube on a fixed shaft, each end cap assembly comprises a rigid housing which supports the bearing, and a separate collar of resilient plastics material mounted on the housing.
Abstract: A conveyor roller comprises a steel roller tube fitted with end cap assemblies incorporating bearings for rotatably mounting the roller tube on a fixed shaft. Each end cap assembly comprises a rigid housing which supports the bearing, and a separate collar of resilient plastics material mounted on the housing. The axially inner end portion of the collar has an annular recess which receives a radial flange on the housing, and the axially outer end portion of the collar consists of inner and outer tubular walls which are spaced apart prior to fitting of the end cap assembly in the roller tube. The external surface of the inner tubular wall is curved radially inwards and axially outwards. Each end cap assembly is secured in position by swaging the end of the tube so as to force the outer wall of the collar against the inner wall along its length. The inner tubular wall of the collar may be of any suitable thickness, so that the end cap assembly can be adapted to fit roller tubes of different diameters by fitting the housing with a collar with an inner tubular wall of appropriate thickness. The radial flange on the housing may be formed with teeth and the axially inner end portion of the collar formed with tongues which project between the teeth so as to lock the collar to the housing for rotation therewith. In a construction in which the housing is made of steel, the teeth may engage the roller tube to provide an electrically conducting path therebetween for static electricity, or alternatively a wire of electrically conducting material may have one end clamped between the collar and the housing and the other end clamped between the collar and the roller tube.

TL;DR: In this paper, the gripper has an axial end surface which, when nondistorted, is slightly sloped axially away from the ferrule as it projects radially outwardly.
Abstract: A fitting having a collar defining a bore which accommodates a plastic tube. The collar defines a tapered seat on the end thereof. A tapered plastic ferrule surrounds the tube and cooperates with the tapered seat for compressing the ferrule into sealing engagement with the tube. The ferrule has an axial end face adapted to abut a deformable plastic gripper sleeve which surrounds the tube, the gripper being surrounded by a nut which threads over the collar. The gripper is disposed in a tapered bore in the nut. The gripper has a tapered exterior surface which extends at an angle which is slightly greater than the angle of the tapered bore. When the nut is threaded onto the collar, the differential taper causes an axial torque to be imposed on the gripper so as to radially distort the gripper into gripping engagement with the tube. The gripper has an axial end surface which, when nondistorted, is slightly sloped axially away from the ferrule as it projects radially outwardly. This end surface is distorted and flattened upon tightening of the nut on the collar so as to abut the end face of the ferrule.

TL;DR: In this paper, an apparatus for retaining a weight on a barbell includes an annular rigid outer section and a radially inner frictional gripping portion, and defines an opening through the collar member to allow the collar to closely and slidably receive the end of the barbell.
Abstract: An apparatus for retaining a weight on a barbell includes a collar member and a weight engagement portion. The collar member has an annular rigid outer section and a radially inner frictional gripping portion, and defines an opening through the collar member to allow the collar to closely and slidably receive the end of the barbell. The weight engagement portion is associated with the annular, rigid outer section of the collar member in such a manner that axially outward movement of the weight or axially outward force thereon will contact the weight engagement portion and/or increase the force thereon, causing the axis of the collar member to skew and/or increase its skewedness with respect to the axis of the barbell, thereby frictionally locking the apparatus onto the bar. This frictional locking may also be achieved by skewing the aforesaid axes by hand, separate and apart from any contact between the weight and the apparatus.

TL;DR: In this article, a pipe collar is provided with an internal precision makeup ring whose length along the pipe axis assures precise positioning and engagement, and the end seals are mounted in grooves in the end recess portions of the collar, outside the threaded engagement region, to provide seals against external pressure.
Abstract: Precision makeup at high speed of the most used forms of pipe and casing for production wells is assured by a novel coupling system. A pipe collar is provided with an internal precision makeup ring whose length along the pipe axis assures precise positioning and engagement. When the nose of the pipe is engaged with metal-to-metal contact against a reference shoulder on the precision ring a side surface on the nose end of the pipe engages a center seal ring disposed in the side wall of the collar between the reference shoulder and the threaded portion. This seal constitutes an effective barrier against the leakage of high internal pressures into the thread engagement region. End seals are mounted in grooves in the end recess portions of the collar, outside the threaded engagement region, to provide seals against external pressure, which can also vent internal pressures that are in excess of a predetermined threshold. With this arrangement, a modified standard collar or a manufactured collar can be placed on a pipe or casing off the drill rig floor, with the axial length of the precision ring being selected to assure makeup tightness adjusted to particular axial stress conditions. Makeup on the rig floor requires only stabbing of the next pipe section into the collar and engagement until metal-to-metal contact is achieved and seals are concurrently established. Pipes and collars can readily be prescreened to eliminate a minor proportion of elements whose thread tapers vary more than is permissible for the given conditions. Fig

TL;DR: In this paper, a stage collar (14) is inserted as a section within the casing string to enable cement to be pumped out through ports (18, 16) in the stage collar.
Abstract: In a two-stage operation to cement the annulus between the wall of a borehole and a casing string (10), a stage collar (14) is inserted as a section within the casing string to enable cement to be pumped out through ports (18, 16) in the stage collar. The stage collar (14) includes a slidable sleeve (17) provided with an internal seat (19) which is engageable by lugs (54) of a pressure pack-off tool assembly (28). The tool assembly (28) is movable within the casing string to control both the opening and the closing of the stage collar. After the second stage cementing operation through the stage collar (14), an overpull is exerted on the drill string which, via the tool assembly (28), first closes and locks closed the stage collar and then breaks off the seat (19) which is lifted to the surface with the drill string. This leaves the borehole clear for the next drill bit without the need to drill out a collar, without any danger of leakage through the locked-shut stage collar (14).
