Abstract: The concept of innovation has become the focal point for the enormous variety of developments that have taken place in American higher education over the past decade. So enamored have educators become with this concept that they have often deluded themselves into thinking it their own contemporary invention. But innova tion in education has been the hallmark of American colleges and universities since their inception. Relevance, the much acclaimed raison d'?tre of innovation, has been the basis of our educational system for centuries. Throughout our history the growth, development, and organization of higher education have been characterized by responsiveness, through innovation, to the needs of our society. If innovation and relevance are to continue to direct our educational develop ment in response to the needs of the future, we must begin now to plan our higher education institutions and our manpower needs, which most certainly will be in close alliance in the years ahead. One of the most significant innovations in higher education is cooperative education, which may well hold the key to preparing us for this task.
