Abstract: The cultural heritage of a nation consists of three parts: the artistic, the natural and the . historical heritages. While over recent years there has been much debate over supporting the continuous existence of the heritage, conducted mainly in terms of welfare economics and in particular merit good arguments in favor of the arts, an increasingly important part of the debate has focused attention of the economic impact of the heritage. In Britain, for instance, SAVE Britain's Heritage produced "Preservation Pays" (Binney and Hanna, 1978) which examined the economic benefits of preserving historic buildings, while in the United States "studies devoted in whole or in part to assessing the economic effects of one or more cultural activities have been conducted in at least

TL;DR: The social context of research provides the background for assessing present and potential roles scientists may play in the Northwest Territories as discussed by the authors, including increasing information return, education through exposure to field science work, research ethics and social context awareness for novice professionals, and policy participation.
Abstract: The social context of research provides the background for assessing present and potential roles scientists may play in the Northwest Territories. This context includes diverse cultural and interest groups and an ever-quickening pace of social change. Increasing scholarly and ethical demands are being placed on the scientific community for academic accountability, public participation, education, and cross-cultural exchange of knowledge. These demands affect us, our disciplines, and our ability to carry on research. The Northern Cultural Heritage Project, an applied anthropology and archaeology program, serves as a case study illustrating the integration of research with the northern social context. Additional potential roles for researchers are discussed, including increasing information return, education through exposure to field science work, research ethics and social context awareness for novice professionals, and policy participation. It is concluded that the contemporary social context of the north has practical and perhaps theoretical implications for the conduct of science. Key words: anthropology, heritage, education, method, theory, policy, human resources, social context

TL;DR: A survey of the legal protection of cultural heritage can be found in this paper, where the authors have collected, translated and analyzed the laws on antiques, artworks, folklore, monuments and sites of almost four hundred jurisdictions.
Abstract: This is a study of the legal protection of cultural heritage. The authors, both senior academics, have collected, translated and analyzed the laws on antiques, artworks, folklore, monuments and sites of almost four hundred jurisdictions. This survey, which considers in detail every relevant national law, court decision, and international recommendation and convention that together comprise the concept of "cultural heritage law", should serve as a basic reference text for all professionals concerned with this topic, whether archaeologist, museum curator, collector, lawyer or government official concerned with the preservation of the cultural patrimony. The first volume gives a general introduction to the series and discusses both the need to protect antiquities and the historical development of legislation for that purpose. The principle of jurisdiction over excavation sites and excavating teams is then described along with the different types of law (antiquities acts, national parks, planning legislation, wreck and salvage law) currently used by countries for the protection of endangered relics.

TL;DR: The importance of conservation to the maintenance of a cultural heritage seems self-evident as discussed by the authors, but scientists' voices often have been muted by art historians more concerned about esthetics than about the science needed to examine, restore, or preserve an art object.
Abstract: Scientists have worked in or for museum conservation laboratories since the turn of the century. But cloistered away in the bowels of museums or in distant college laboratories, their presence has seldom been prominent. And given the hierarchy that prevailed—art historians/curators the elite in museums, conservators on a par with custodians, and scientists perceived as employees serving conservators—scientists' voices often have been muted by art historians more concerned about esthetics than about the science needed to examine, restore, or preserve an art object. The importance of conservation to the maintenance of a cultural heritage seems self-evident. As director of the National Portrait Gallery Alan Fern pungently puts it, museums as custodians of this heritage "are dealing with objects that have an inherent vice: They all deteriorate at a greater or lesser rate." Pigments, dyes, and varnishes oxidize and darken. Light fades colors in paintings, prints, and photographs and weakens the ...

TL;DR: The conservationist movement and the understanding of the plight of the aborigines are only two aspects of our new sense of the past as discussed by the authors, and it is now widely recognised that the last ten to fifteen years have been marked by a new awareness of our cultural heritage.
Abstract: It is now widely recognised that the last ten to fifteen years have been marked by a new awareness of our cultural heritage. The conservationist movement and the understanding of the plight of the aborigines are only two aspects of our new sense of the past. Not only has an increasing awareness of nature and our surroundings been developing but also a new sensitivity to the colonial inheritance, not only paintings and books but furniture and buildings. This can be seen in the work of the National Trusts - and the large number of restorations, facsimile reprints and reproductions shows how widespread the tendency is. It is not just a question of museum preservation, but of actual restoration of many different aspects of life.

TL;DR: The conservation of Britain's cultural heritage is now a matter of national significance as mentioned in this paper and there is a general concern for retaining samples and aspects of the fabric of past societies for posterity.
Abstract: The conservation of Britain's cultural heritage is now a matter of national significance. Changes in society and in our surroundings have recently been so considerable that a general concern has developed for retaining samples and aspects of the fabric of past societies for posterity—as direct links with our past and as stages in the development of our modern civilization in Britain. Whichever aspect of our cultural heritage is under consideration—art, science, technology, customs or landscape—there are formidable problems of principle and practice. These include questions like: Why do we conserve? What for? What do we conserve? What criteria do we use to select for conservation? How do we conserve?
