TL;DR: The historical importance of the Dead Sea Scrolls has been discussed in this article, where a discussion of the archaeology of the site of Qumran and the discovery of the various caves is discussed.
Abstract: mong the literary sources for the history of Syria-Palestine unearthed in tablet, epigraphic, or manuscript form during the past century, the Dead Sea Scrolls occupy a position of paramount interest and importance. This paper will consider the historical importance of these intriguing texts. After a discussion of the archaeology of the site of Qumran and of the discovery of the various caves, the biblical texts of the Dead Sea Scrolls will be reviewed. (A second article, to be published in a subsequent issue of BA, will deal with the nonbiblical manuscripts, which comprise the vast majority of texts from the Dead Sea caves.)
