Abstract: The soil family was used to describe soil map units in an intermediate level survey of British Columbia. The main obstacle to its application was determination of soil climate. Soil climate (soil temperature classes and soil moisture subclasses) was derived from atmospheric climate data. It was then related to climax forest vegetation which was used to locate map unit boundaries. By linking biological characteristics to the soil survey, interpretations for wildlife and forestry were enhanced. At the level in which the survey was conducted, the soil family usefully reflected the soil variation in the landscape while providing ample information for most land use interpretations.
