TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe how cars (4) are loaded individually onto pallets (10U, L) at assembly plants (MP) and remain on the pallets until they reach the dealers (D).
Abstract: Cars (4) are loaded individually onto pallets (10U, L) at assembly plants (MP) and remain on the pallets (10) until they reach the dealers (D). Most of the palleted cars (4) are transported in specially equipped, closed rail cars from each assembly plant (MP) to a main distribution center (HDC) where they are unloaded, allocated to either satellite distribution centers (SDC) or to dealers (D), and reloaded for transport ultimately to dealers (D), often via a satellite distribution center (SDC). The same pallets (10) can be used to transport the cars (4) in highway trailers (8) and standard intermodal cargo containers. The cars (4) remain on the pallets (10), are never driven, and are protected from weather and vandalism from the time they leave the plant (MP) until they reach the dealers' lots.
