Abstract: In a monorail system a lightweight vehicle is designed for suspension from an overhead rail by drive units extending upwardly from a longitudinal beam which defines the main support for the entire vehicle structure, and the drive units are characterized in particular by having drive wheels pivotally mounted to swing upwardly under running engagement with the rail from a line normal to the running surface of the rail, to increase the urging and pressure of the drive wheel against the running surface.

[Also in Division B8] In a manipulator vehicle for negotiating uneven terrain and steps or stairs under remote control, a body 1 is supported by a twin-wheel steerable bogie 30 and by port and starboard endless track assemblies which are rotatable in unison about a common axis of pivotal attachment to the body by power means and are each asymmetrical with respect to that axis. Each endless-track assembly comprises a rubber track 55 entrained around a drive wheel 49 and track wheels 40, 41 and rollers 42 carried by a girder structure 39. Gear-wheels 44 secured to each girder structure 39 are driven by a common transverse shaft 45 which is connected through a gear train 47 and a torque-limiting clutch 48 to a track rotation motor 46 and is lockable by a brake to position the track assemblies in any desired attitude. Each drive wheel 49 is connected by a resilient member 52 to a drive plate 50 on a shaft 37 driven through worm gearing 36 from one of traction motors 35. V-belts 54 extend around grooves 53 in the drive wheels 49 and the track wheels 40 and rollers 42. Raised treads 58 on the tracks 55 are formed with closely-spaced transverse slits. The steerable bogie 30 has twin wheels 31 resiliently mounted thereon and is rotated about a vertical axis by a steering motor and worm gearing 32. A turret head 2 mounted on the body 1 carries television cameras 3 and a power manipulator arm 4. The turret head 2 is supported by an hydraulically-actuated manipulator post 5 rotatably mounted on the body by means of a turntable gear 6. A motor 10 for rotating the gear 6 also drives a cable drum 8 surrounding the post 5. A control and power cable 9 is fed on and off the drum 8 through a layering device 23, a fair lead 12 and a cable guide 14 carried by a spring 15 which is fitted with a sensing device 16 for controlling the speed of the motor 10 and hence the movement of the drum 5 through a variable resistor. The endless-tracks may be dispensed with and tyred wheels substituted for the track wheels shown.

Abstract: A device for automatically unwinding paper tape from a roll and feeding it, under gentle tension, to the output tape punch of a tape justifying computer. The device has a drive wheel, for tractively propelling the tape, and three rollers, one of which is mounted on a pivot arm and rides in a loop formed in the tape between the other two. Power is supplied to the drive wheel by a gear head motor which is automatically controlled by a mercury switch connected in series therewith and mounted on the abovementioned pivot arm. As the tape slackens, the pivot arm moves downwardly and causes the mercury switch to turn off the motor.

A conveyer comprises trolleys running on a guiding track, trolley propelling means, a trolley storage section, and means for selectively advancing trolleys through the storage section comprising at least one endless driving belt which engages at least one drive wheel mounted on the trolley with a predetermined degree of frictional resistance to rotation. The main track 1, Fig. 2, comprises two vertically spaced box-section rails 10, 16, the upper one 10 carrying a driving chain comprising links 11 carried on vertical wheels 12 and links 111 guided by horizontal wheels 13, each link 11 carrying a fixed pusher 14 and pivoted latch 15 which project from a slot in the lower side of rail 10 into the vicinity of the lower rail 16 which comprises a pair of opposed channel-shaped members 20. Each trolley comprises a longitudinal bar 17 having two pairs of wheels 18 mounted on horizontal axles 19 and a pair of wheels 22 mounted on a vertical axle 21 which projects from the top of the rail 16 and carries a roller 23 to engage the pusher 14. Guide rollers 25 mounted on vertical axles 24 attached to the bar 17 engage the lower opposed edges of the members 20, and the axles 24 also carry a bracket 26 which supports the load. The upper wheel 22 mounted on the vertical axle 21 is mounted over a large-diameter bush to provide a predetermined frictional resistance to rotation In the storage section, the trolley is disconnected from the chain, and the channel member 20 on one side of the track is omitted, the position of its vertical web being occupied by one flight 31 of an endless driving belt moving on edge against a backing plate 32, and engaging the upper wheel 22, the lower wheel 22 engaging the vertical portion of an L-shaped member 20 on the other side of the track. The wheels 18 on the same side of the track as the belt are free from any engagement, while the other wheels 18 engage the horizontal flange of member 20. If the trolley is free from any obstruction, the upper wheel 22 will not rotate and the trolley is advanced by the belt. When an obstruction is met, e.g. when the trolley joins a queue of trolleys, the upper wheel 22 will rotate and the trolley will stop. The lower wheel 22 may be omitted, Fig. 6 (not shown) lateral guidance being assisted by a space fitted in the angle of the L-shaped member 20. In a modification, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the wheels 18 and 22 are mounted perpendicular to each other and at 45 degrees to the vertical so that part of the weight of the trolley provides driving pressure on the belt. In another modification, Figs. 9, 10, 11 (not shown), the outer edges of the wheels 18 are bevelled and the bevelled portion of the wheels engage a suitably inclined portion of guide member 20 producing a sideways driving pressure on the belt which runs on edge as in Fig. 5. The belt is provided with a number of projections (33) which, when the trolley is free, help to accelerate it to the speed of the chain, and when the trolley is queuing merely tilt it slightly. Release from the queuing section is effected by means of an escapement (4), e.g. in the form of a pair of alternately reciprocable pawls, Fig. 1 (not shown), which release the trolleys one or more at a time, the remainder of the trolleys then being advanced by the endless belt to provide more queuing space.

Abstract: A carrying cart useful for game animal retrieval purposes, and a winch useful for pulling the cart. The cart is of narrow, lightweight, open frame construction and has a detachable load basket supported at about waist height by an undercarriage. It rolls on a single wheel mounted at the center of an axle running the full width of the cart. The winch is attachable to the hub of a jacked-up drive wheel of an automobile where it operates coactively with the wheel hub to pull the loaded cart by means of a connecting cable.
