TL;DR: The ego's motivation is best accounted for in terms of ego-instincts as mentioned in this paper, where instinctual drives which are acceptable to the child's social environment become the ego while the unacceptable are repressed to form the id.
Abstract: Psychoanalytic ego psychology has discarded the concept of ego-instincts and treats the ego as a group of control functions autonomous of the instinctual drives and in fact opposed to them The reality principle is supposed to give rise to the ego's policies, but the matters of fact yielded by reality-testing are policy-neutral and can only generate a policy through interaction with already existing drives The ego's motivation is best accounted for in terms of ego-instincts Those instinctual drives which are acceptable to the child's social environment become the ego while the unacceptable are repressed to form the id To account for behaviour by reference to “personal agency” allows no basis for either explanation or prediction
