Abstract: A massive power outage is a widespread interruption or loss of electrical service caused by accident, sabotage/terrorism, natural hazards, or equipment failure. This is not an uncommon event. Causes of electrical power outages can be natural, such as lightning, high winds, ice storms, hurricanes, floods, and human error, in addition to accidents or deliberate sabotage or attack of the power system. Clinical operations within the health care facility are dependent on electronic equipment, electrically operated devices, and electrically controlled and powered environmental conditioning. Injuries from the direct effect of a power failure, hypothermia and hyperthermia, and indirect effects and injuries as citizens attempt to cope with generalized loss of electrical power will occur.
