TL;DR: In this paper, a metering system for an internal combustion engine with an electronic control unit (22) for influencing at least one of the constituents of the operating mixture is described.
Abstract: A metering system for an internal combustion engine with an electronic control unit (22) for influencing at least one of the constituents of the operating mixture and with a first exhaust measuring probe (20) arranged in the exhaust duct (18) of the internal combustion engine (10), the output signal from which probe together with other operating variables of the internal combustion engine (10) such as load, speed or temperature etc. is fed to the control unit (22) and is further processed inside the control unit (22) by way of a control function, with an exhaust catalytic converter (19), arranged downstream after the first exhaust gas probe (20) in the exhaust duct (18) and a second measuring sensor arranged in the exhaust duct (18) is described, in which the second measuring sensor is arranged downstream in the exhaust duct (18) after the exhaust catalytic converter (19) and is designed as second exhaust gas measuring probe (21). The output signal of the second exhaust gas measuring probe (21) is fed to the control unit (22) and inside the control unit (22) is further processed by way of a control function with a time constant different from the time constant of the first control function. It is thereby possible to reduce the pollutant emissions of the internal combustion engine whilst maintaining good handling and optimum consumption. This results in a high control frequency and low control amplitude of the control function, so that the degree of conversion of the catalytic converter is significantly improved.

TL;DR: In this article, an electronic control unit (27) coupled to a fluid servo power system (31) is used to control on/off control valves (21 to 24) in a gas turbine engine.
Abstract: The invention simplifies arrangements for controlling on/off control valves (21 to 24) in a gas turbine engine by means of an electronic control unit (27) coupled to a fluid servo power system (31) Essentially, a servo valve (33) controlled by the electronic control unit (27) temporarily connects the servo power system (31) to a source (41) of high pressure air, thereby passing a pulse of high pressure air to a motor driven multiplex valve (35), which again is actuated by signals from the electronic control unit (27) The multiplex valve (35) is utilised to distribute each pressure pulse as it arrives to any one of a number of control valves (21 to 24) as designated by the electronic control unit (27) The pressure pulses operate the control valves into their 'on' or 'off' positions as the case may be, the control valves being of the latching type (Figure 3, not shown) so that each stays in the position to which a pressure pulse has driven it until the next pressure pulse arrives

Abstract: Toyota succeeded in the fall of 1984 in manufacturing a complex engine and transmission control system using a newly developed single-chip microcomputer. This microcomputer, equipped with an 8K-byte ROM (Read Only Memory) and a 256-byte RAM (Random Access Memory), a powerful real time processing function, and a high-speed optimum instruction set, is better suited for automobiles. Application of the latest CMOS technology has enabled lower power consumption and improved noise immunity. The new system, which includes a new function, the electronic spark advance with knock control in addition to the conventional sophisticated system, has greatly improved the performance and driveability of vehicles. The newly designed electronic control unit (ECU) has been greatly improved in reliability and has not changed in its size with the adoption of the highly integrated new microcomputer, which is due to the fact that it uses fewer LSIs (Large Scale Integrated circuits) than the conventional ECU, although it includes the great additional function.

Abstract: A speed governor for fuel injection pumps of internal combustion engines has an electric control motor driven via an electronic control unit for actuating a quantity control member of the injection pump. A travel limitating element of the quantity control member is provided in order to determine the maximum injection quantity. The travel limitating element is adjustable independently of the electronic control unit between a position for the starting quantity and a position for the full-load quantity in accordance with engine characteristics. While the operating rpm performance graph is controlled by the electrical portion of the speed governor, the maximum rpm is determined by hydraulic-mechanical means.

Abstract: A newly developed fault-interrupting device employs radical departures in overcurrent sensing, response, and interruption techniques. It offers a large selection of time-current characteristic curves plus high continuous current ratings combined with efficient current-limiting action in a compact, self-contained package not requiring external sensing or control power. Improved protection and coordination can be provided in a wide variety of medium-voltage circuit and equipment applications, some of which cannot be properly addressed with previously available devices. Sensing and response functions of the electronic control module and operation of the interrupting module are described. Examples are presented illustrating use of the flexible response characteristics in the solution of difficult protection and coordination applications.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a control system consisting of an actuator of a governor for controlling the fuel flow rate and an electronic timer for controlling fuel injection timing, to prevent drop of the output torque of an engine.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent drop of the output torque of an engine, by detecting change of an injection timing signal given from an electronic timer, and driving an actuator of a governor for controlling the fuel-flow rate in case that delay of the fuel injection timing is caused from the full-load torque condition at the time of steady operation of the engine. CONSTITUTION:A control system of this invention comprises an actuator 2 of a governor for controlling the fuel-flow rate and an electronic timer 1 for controlling the fuel injection timing. An engine-speed signal S1 given from an engine-speed sensor 4, an injection timing signal S3 given from a timing sensor 1a, etc. are furnished to an electronic control unit 6. In case that the injection timing signal S3 is delayed, an engine is controlled to have full-load torque characteristics at the time of steady operation of the same by applying a driving signal to the governor actuator 2 from the electronic control unit 6 and increasing the fuel-flow rate according to the engine speed. With such an arrangement, it is enabled to prevent deviation of the injection timing, for instance, at the time of starting a vehicle having a diesel engine mounted thereon and to thereby prevent drop of the output torque of the vehicle.

TL;DR: In this article, a system for the control of the air-fuel ratio in an internal combustion engine incorporates an electronic control unit, a sensor of exhaust emissions and a valve for metering fuel with air to control the air fuel ratio.
Abstract: A system for the control of the air-fuel ratio in an internal combustion engine incorporates an electronic control unit, a sensor of exhaust emissions and a valve for metering fuel with air to control the air-fuel ratio. The electronic control unit provides for the comparison of the successive measurements of the sensor output voltage under conditions wherein the fuel valve is being operated for ever increasing richness or leaness until such time as the differential measurement drops below a predetermined amount. An offset voltage is then subtracted from or added to this voltage to calculate an operating set point voltage. Thereby, the system's accuracy is maintained through the compensation for changed sensor characteristics with aging.

Abstract: A device for controlling the metering of fuel into an internal combustion engine is proposed, in which the inputs of the driver for the influencing of certain controls are fed in not by the selection of a certain operating element of the corresponding control but by certain, predeterminable operating states of the vehicle. In the example embodiment described, two operating elements for the inputs of the driver are connected in parallel or in series and connected to the electronic control unit for influencing of the fuel metering into the internal combustion engine. The inputs of the driver on one of the two operating elements are then fed by the control unit to the corresponding controls according to the speed of travel of the vehicle. It is thereby also possible to actuate the intermediate speed control and the speed-of-travel control from just one operating element.
