Abstract: The professional skills of a competent social worker can be utilized by the physician to decrease the pressure created by those patients whom he would like to help if he had the time. Physicians are aware of "social problems" but few have had experience in this collaborative work. Illness-aggravating forces require the breadth of assistance that can be provided by the social worker. By this means the totality of the physician's function is increased.
