Abstract: Parker in 1946 was the first to describe a syndrome of periodic ataxia in 11 patients, which was familial in four and a manifestation of multiple sclerosis in the remainder. This was before periodic attacks of dysarthria and ataxia (p. 130) were recognised as characteristic paroxysms caused by demyelinated pathways within pontine and brachium conjunctivum structures in multiple sclerosis (Andermann et al. 1959; Harrison and McGill 1969; Osterman and Westerberg 1975).
