TL;DR: This article reviewed the psychological and legal literature dealing with occupational stereotypes, and presented the results of an empirical study showing that individuals respond differently to purportedly neutral job descriptions depending on sex and ethnicity.
Abstract: The study of occupational stereotypes contributes to our theoretical understanding of the psychological dynamics of stereotyping and exposes profound practical dilemmas that face a legal system theoretically mandated to guarantee equal employment opportunities. In this article, we review the psychological and legal literature dealing with occupational stereotypes, and we present the results of an empirical study showing that individuals respond differently to purportedly neutral job descriptions depending on sex and ethnicity.

TL;DR: The Alberti family as mentioned in this paper was a prominent Florentine merchant-banking family that was exiled from the city of Florence for conspiracy against the state; they were not allowed to return until 1428.
Abstract: POLITICAL EXILE punished an offending individual through public humiliation, deprivation of political rights, separation from family and friends, from business and property.I This situation was difficult but manageable for an individual since he and his dependents could turn to members of the extended family for aid and comfort. However, if all the family's men were banished, the situation was potentially catastrophic. The Alberti, a prominent Florentine merchant-banking family, found itself in just such a situation.2 In January I40I, all Alberti men were exiled from the city of Florence for conspiracy against the state; they were not allowed to return until 1428. This paper will explore the consequences of their long and unusual banishment from Florence.3 How the Alberti strove to minimize the effects of exile and why they did so demonstrate the significant role women played and the extent of family solidarity in the face of adversity. The Alberti's experience in exile also suggests that a revised interpretation of banishment's consequences is in order.

TL;DR: The authors assesses the impact of individual differences in construct system development (cognitive differentiation and abstractness) on concern for, and strategic attention to, face wants in persuasive situations and find a strong relationship between construct development and concern for face as evidenced in rationales for behavior.
Abstract: This study assesses the impact of individual differences in construct system development (cognitive differentiation and abstractness) on concern for, and strategic attention to, face wants in persuasive situations. Hierarchic regression analyses suggest a strong relationship between construct development and concern for face as evidenced in rationales for behavior. Actual use of more sophisticated face saving strategies also was strongly influenced by individual differences in construct development.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify how regular high school and middle school social studies and science teachers approach teaching their most academically diverse class. And they find that the goal of improved planning for students with learning disabilities who participate in regular classrooms must be accomplished within the realities of the secondary-school setting and content curriculum.
Abstract: The goal of this investigation was to identify how regular high school and middle school social studies and science teachers approach teaching their most academically diverse class. Specifically, we sought to determine whether or not the typical special education model of individualization could be part of the framework for approaching academically diverse classes. Information from this study will serve as the basis for conceptualizing interventions that will enable regular classroom teachers to better plan and teach students with mild handicaps. Fifty-one teachers were given questionnaires and asked to participate in a series of Cooperative Study Groups. Fourteen Cooperative Study Groups were created from the pool of teachers. At the initial meeting, participants answered four questions related to teaching and planning for their most academically diverse classes. The results of the questionnaire and the initial round of Cooperative Study Group meetings are presented here. In general, we found that the goal of improved planning for students with learning disabilities who participate in regular classrooms must be accomplished within the realities of the secondary-school setting and content curriculum. Participants indicated that their willingness to individualize depended on the level and extent of individualization required and the impact of such individualization on the rest of the students in the class. Based on these findings, a new paradigm for planning for mainstreamed students with disabilities at the secondary level appears to be needed.

TL;DR: In this article, the complexity of the composition of the Chinese population in this country is discussed and a pilot study of language choice within a sub-group of students is presented in the context of wider sociolinguistic issues Chinese people face as they seek to come to terms with life in Britain.
Abstract: Sociolinguistic patterns of Chinese communities in Britain are a rich and important field which has yet to be systematically explored. Any investigation into the internal structuring and cultural norms and values of these communities must be sensitive to the social and historical background of the people concerned. As a first step towards providing more accurate information, this paper discusses the complexity of the composition of the Chinese population in this country. Findings from a pilot study of language choice within a sub‐group of students are presented. These findings are discussed in the context of wider sociolinguistic issues the Chinese people face as they seek to come to terms with life in Britain.

TL;DR: One of the striking features of Origen's Contra Celsum is his awareness of Stoic philosophy as discussed by the authors, and the debate about the extent of his dependence on this usually concentrates on the area of ethics as well as his quasi-Stoic theory of recurrent worlds.
Abstract: I. One of the striking features of Origen's Contra Celsum is his awareness of Stoic philosophy. The debate about the extent of his dependence on this usually concentrates on the area of ethics as well as his quasi-Stoic theory of recurrent worlds. 1 Yet one aspect of his thought overlooked by scholars is his concept of time, which is a key to his entire philosophy and theology. Crucial cosmological, anthropological, moral, and eschatological ideas as well as Origen's attitude to death are all intimately related to the way in which time is perceived and given meaning. Indeed, the notion of time constitutes the core of any entire philosophy. Hence, the way thinkers conceive of time derives from their overall view of reality, their fundamental philosophical premises, their notion of being, and their metlhods aind dialectics. Yet there is also mutual influence: not only does any philosophy presuppose a certain conception of time, but also any given view of time determines the nature of a general philosophical attitude: how to live, the purpose of life, how to face death, the basis of hope, the concept of God, a Weltanschauung and destiny, if any, the question of creation, and all the secular implications that the notion of creation involves-all these are notions bound to the concept of time. The questions about time which Origen had to face may initially seem simple, but they are not, for the philosophical tradition had not produced any consensus. It is no accident that although the questions related to space resulted in agreement for lengthy periods, the problem of time has always been highly controversial. On looking, for example, at the question of the reality of time, one sees that since the period of the Eleatic philosophers discussions placed very much in doubt the real existence of time. Aristotle's syllogisms also reinforced this.2 To the Stoics time was just a "something" between being and non-being.3 But to the Gnostics, time had

TL;DR: In this article, a discussion of models for fertility and employment decisions is presented, with a focus on those models which consider both fertility and job decisions, and the discussion is limited to those models that consider both the fertility and the employment decisions.
Abstract: Economists take preferences as given, and are concerned with how changes in the constraints that people face, or limits to their choice, alter their behaviour. Indeed, by observing how behaviour changes with elements of these constraints (e. g. prices), they attempt to make inferences about preferences. This viewpoint is maintained in the discussion that follows. In empirical applications, variation in preferences only appears as unobserved random variables. The discussion of models is limited to those which consider both fertility and employment decisions.

TL;DR: A presentation of poems by the contemporary American poet, A.R. Ammons, reveals that fine poetry deserves to be called "rigorous" as discussed by the authors and exemplifies a willingness to face up to the terms of existence and to use language to mean what one says and to mean well.
Abstract: As the public#shsocial life of the culture has come to be founded on paradigmatic images from the social sciences, especially psychology, poetic images have been cast into disrepute. However, a presentation of poems by the contemporary American poet, A.R.. Ammons, reveals that fine poetry deserves to be called “rigorous.” His work exemplifies a willingness to face up to the terms of existence and to use language to mean what one says and to mean well. Mainstream psychology strategically opposes that kind of rigor, a point underscored by education students’ psychologized analyses of a teaching problem. It is concluded that a psychology not founded on romanticism is too impractical and too cynical to function authoritatively.
