TL;DR: In this paper, a small guard mounted on the shaft of a needle is used to prevent the needle from moving forward off the needle once the device is activated. But the guard is not designed to ride on the needle shaft.
Abstract: A small protective guard rides on the shaft of a needle. After the needle has been inserted into a patient to deliver or withdraw fluids, the guard is positioned to form a protective barrier crossing in front of the needle tip. The guard is fashioned to collapse inward in front of the tip when its front portion is advanced past the needle tip. The guard carries sharp blades that engage the needle shaft and prevent the guard from moving forward off the needle once the device is activated. An optional manually operated trigger mechanism deploys the guard automatically.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a guard rail actuated safety apparatus to prevent simultaneous lowering of a pair of guard rails to inoperative positions in which they are ineffective to prevent a patient from falling off the edge of a patient support assembly 12.
Abstract: Guard rail actuated safety apparatus (42, FIG. 1; 89, FIGS. 5A and 5B) is operative to prevent simultaneous lowering of both of a pair of guard rails (26, 28) to inoperative positions in which they are ineffective to prevent a patient from falling off the edge of a patient support assembly 12. In one embodiment, the guard rails are secured together by a cable (44) which holds the guard rails against concurrent lowering. In an electromechanical embodiment, a controller (89, FIG. 5) senses the guard rail (26, 28) position, and blocks the lowering of either guard rail (26, 28) whenever the other is lowered. In addition, or alternatively, the controller (89) actuates a brake 146, sounds an alarm (136), raises the guard rails (26, 28) after a time delay (158), deactuates a drive motor (118) for a movable or adjustable patient support assembly (12) or releases air from a pneumatic mattress (12A'). An attendant detector (141, 143, 138, 140 ) overrides actuation of the selected alarm condition responsive apparatus (146, 148, 150, 152, 154) and rail latch actuators (93, 95, 91, 97) when an attendant is detected alongside the bed (8).

TL;DR: In this paper, an energy absorbing guard rail terminal has been proposed for longitudinally extending roadways with a number of overlapping horizontally extending parallel guard rails positioned on oppositely disposed sides of a plurality of break away posts with the upstream ends of the guard rails secured to the post.
Abstract: An improvement to an energy absorbing guard rail terminal for use on longitudinally extending roadways. The energy absorbing guard rail terminal having a number of overlapping horizontally extending parallel guard rails positioned on oppositely disposed sides of a plurality of longitudinally spaced break away posts with the upstream ends of the guard rails secured to the post. Splice bolts connect the overlapping ends of adjacent rails which are characterized by a plurality of openings within each horizontal rail aligned with the splice bolts whereby the impact of the vehicle on the upstream end of the rails will force the bolts to shred out the rail material between the openings within the rails. By absorbing the kinetic energy of the impacting vehicle, the collapseable guard rail terminal allows for safe deceleration of the vehicle upon impact, avoiding serious injury to the driver.

TL;DR: In this article, a knee guard and a brace with a single medial condyle support pad is attached to a plate hingedly connected to the inner side of an upper longitudinal rib within the medial side member.
Abstract: A knee guard and brace having both lateral and medial side members in which a single, medial condyle support pad is affixed to a plate hingedly connected to the inner side of an upper longitudinal rib within the medial side member A spacer mounted on the plate and rotatable about a pivot thereon determines the angle at which the longitudinal centerlines of the medial condyle support pad and of the upper rib are inclined with respect to each other when the pad is pressed as far as possible medially, that is, in a direction toward the median plane of the human body The spacer includes an eccentric arm with a ramp which can be rotated about the pivot The medial condyle support pad is readily positioned to accommodate a particular user without elaborate custom-fitting once the thigh and calf support pads in the lateral side member have been custom-fitted to his leg and strapped thereon Optimum placement of the medial condyle support pad so as to protect a wearer's knee against valgus-directed forces is achieved simply by pressing the condyle support pad against the inner surface of the knee and rotating the eccentric arm as far as possible into a gap which exists between the plate and the rib and then fixing the arm in that position

TL;DR: In this paper, a rotary blade guard system for power driven rotary saws is described, where a blade guard is installed on the inner wall of the saw blade and an arcuate track slot is disposed on the blade guard adjacent to the drive shaft arm.
Abstract: A blade guard system for power driven rotary saws having a drive shaft arm rotatable between inboard and outboard cutting positions relative to the chassis, a blade guard disposed about a portion of the saw blade and rotatably attached to the saw blade shaft. An arcuate track slot is disposed on the inner wall of the blade guard adjacent to the drive shaft arm. A blade guard adjust arm is pivotally mounted at one end to the drive shaft arm and the other end of the blade guard adjust arm being releasably attachable at selected locations along the track slot to position the blade guard in desired protective positions. When the blade guard adjust arm is released from the track slot, rotation of the blade guard and the blade guard adjust arm to selected protective positions is permitted without the need to remove the blade guard or blade from the saw blade shaft. The construction and arrangement of the adjust arm, blade guard and track slot provide for improved resistance to fatigue failure of the blade guard as well as facilitating the change from inboard to outboard operating positions.

TL;DR: The Belgian Paracommando Regiment as mentioned in this paper was the first international hostage rescue in the post-World War II era, and the challenge was enormous, the risks staggering; the paracommandos were jumping into a perilous den of uncertainty.
Abstract: : For the Belgian Paracommando Regiment, the Congo was a familiar, though often hostile, environment. For most of the officers and sergeants of the regiment, the fields, buildings, and river below were as familiar as the Belgian landscape. But for most of the 340 enlisted men drifting in the sky over the airfield, the Congo was an unknown menace outside their military experience. Most of these paras were young draftees to whom the Congo represented a closed chapter in Belgium's colonial history. Yet even with the experience of its senior leadership, the Belgian Paracommandos faced a severe test on this early spring morning. The young paras and their seasoned leaders were conducting the first international hostage rescue in the post-World War II era. The challenge was enormous, the risks staggering; the Paracommandos were jumping into a perilous den of uncertainty. Stanleyville was at the heart of the Simba Rebellion and the scene of the growing desperation. Faced with a government ground assault, the Simba leaders had taken several thousand non-Congolese hostages to guard against what appeared to be imminent defeat. Keywords: Military operations.

TL;DR: In this paper, a prisoner asks the guard to tell him a name, either b or c, of a person who will be exiled, but the guard, who is forbidden to converse with the prisoners, refuses to be drawn out.
Abstract: Two out of three prisoners, a, b and c, are to be exiled, while the third goes free. The choice of the two has been determined by a fair draw, of whose outcome they are ignorant. Prisoner a is keen to find out his fate, and attempts to question the guard, who knows the result of the draw. Knowing that at least one of the other two prisoners will be exiled, a asks the guard to tell him a name, either b or c, of a person who will be exiled. The guard, who is forbidden to converse with the prisoners, refuses to be drawn out. However, a, who is an amateur probability theorist, reasons to himself as follows: "If the guard had named b, I would have concluded that my chance of being freed was 1/2. If the guard had named c, I would have reasoned analogously. Either way, my likelihood of being freed is 1/2." How has this thought-experiment raised a's probability of freedom from 1/3 to 1/2?1 When faced with such a paradox, one possible strategy is to embrace its conclusion, and endorse a's reasoning. We would then have to expose the error in the initial distribution of probabilities, drawing, perhaps, on some subtle feature of the story. However, the existence of the guard is merely a narrative embellishment. Indeed, we can imagine the prisoner reasoning about a hypothetical guard, and it is hard to see how the a priori distribution of equal probabilities to each prisoner's going free given the knowledge that their fate is to be decided by a fair draw can be faulted. The guard, whether hypotheti? cal or real, can make no difference. Worse still, analogous reasoning can be used to undermine the very possibility of assigning probabilities. To see this, we begin by suppos
