TL;DR: It is concluded that dietary restriction of nickel is not warranted based on nickel supplement studies, but nickel's role in hand eczema could be clarified by depleting nickel from body stores with chelating agents.
Abstract: Ten women with vesicular hand eczema and delayed hypersensitivity to nickel were given 0.5 mg nickel supplements to their diets. The double-blind controlled supplements were given on Monday and Tuesday of each week for at least 1 month. The nickel supplement was lower than that used in previous studies, and only one subject had reproducible flaring of her vesicular dermatitis. We conclude that dietary restriction of nickel is not warranted based on nickel supplement studies, but nickel's role in hand eczema could be clarified by depleting nickel from body stores with chelating agents.

TL;DR: A nation-wide study comprising all applications for permanent disability pension due to skin diseases in the period 1970--1976 was carried out, finding the most common diagnosis was contact dermatitis followed by psoriasis and connective-tissue diseases.
Abstract: An analysis of causes of permanent disability indicates which diseases most frequently result in chronicity and inability to work. A nation-wide study comprising all applications for permanent disability pension due to skin diseases in the period 1970--1976 was carried out. A total of 564 persons applied. The most common diagnosis was contact dermatitis followed by psoriasis and connective-tissue diseases. Allergic contact dermatitis alone accounted for 222 cases. 70% of these were due to nickel and chromium allergy. In all the diagnostic groups there was a preponderance of women except for hyperkeratotic hand eczema and genodermatoses. The frequency of the individual disorders in the present study is discussed in relation to their prevalence and prognosis in the literature.

TL;DR: Among 564 Danes applying for permanent disability pension due to skin diseases, 222 had allergic contact eczema, the next most common disorder, and nickel allergy was found in 99 cases, of whom 91 were women with hand Eczema.
Abstract: Among 564 Danes applying for permanent disability pension due to skin diseases, 222 had allergic contact eczema. Psoriasis was the next most common disorder. Nickel allergy was found in 99 cases, of whom 91 were women with hand eczema. In 43 the primary eczema was on the hands, in 38 under costume jewellery, suspenders, ect. Besides nickel the patients were often sensitive to cobalt, rubber and formaldehyde. Within Denmark there were geographical differences, as only few applicants came from the rural areas. Ten were atopics. 63 were chrome sensitive, including 21 women who all had hand eczema. Like the nickel sensitive they often had additional allergies to cobalt, rubber and formaldehyde. In 53% of the nickel sensitive the hand eczema started in occupations with a high nickel exposure. 39% had frequent changes in occupation, often to a new job with occupational nickel contact. As the patients in the present study were all selected on the basis of their poor prognoses, we have tried to establish prognostic criteria through comparison with unselected material from within the same geographical area.

TL;DR: Potassium dichromate and PPD mix were statistically more frequently involved as skin allergens in males than in females, whereas nickel sulphate, thiuram mix and neomycin sulphate gave a significantly higher number of positive responses in women than in men.
Abstract: A total of 400 patients suffering from hand eczema were patch tested to 25 chemicals (20 from the standard series of the ICDRG plus five from the Tri-Contact of Belgium); 197 (49.2%) had a positive patch test to one or more substances, and there was no significant difference in the prevalence between males and females. Potassium dichromate and PPD mix were statistically more frequently involved as skin allergens in males than in females, whereas nickel sulphate, thiuram mix and neomycin sulphate gave a significantly higher number of positive responses in women than in men. Results of this epidemiological survey are discussed in the light of similar studies from the literature.
