TL;DR: In this paper, a longitudinally extending fingers adapted to surround a hone and the ends of which carry template segments having inner abutment surfaces having a radius at least as great as the maximum radius of the cylindrical surface to be honed.
Abstract: A honing template comprising longitudinally extending fingers adapted to surround a hone and the ends of which carry template segments having inner abutment surfaces that are spaced to abut non abrasive surfaces that are in line with the stones when the stones are expanded to the finished diameter of the cylinder being honed. The inner abutment surfaces of the segments have a radius at least as great as the maximum radius of the cylindrical surface to be honed. The fingers have a tapered surface that is abutted by an annular ring which is wedged over said tapered surfaces to adjust the radial position of the template segments.

TL;DR: In this article, a generally cylindrical tool for internally honing a workpiece which may have an interrupted bore is disclosed having a plurality of radially disposed axially extending tool supported thermoplastic guide members for engaging the workpiece at a first relatively constant pressure to aid in aligning the tool with the work piece.
Abstract: A generally cylindrical honing tool for internally honing a workpiece which may have an interrupted bore is disclosed having a plurality of radially disposed axially extending tool supported thermoplastic guide members for engaging the workpiece at a first relatively constant pressure to aid in aligning the tool with the workpiece and having a plurality of radially disposed axially extending tool supported abrasive elements for engaging the workpiece at a pressure which is variable and independent of the guide pressure for abrading material from the workpiece.

TL;DR: In this paper, an automatic control means for controlling the incremental feeding of the tools and for compensating for tool wear are provided for adjusting incrementally or manually to effect fine feeding movement following the rapid advance thereof.
Abstract: A feeding device, especially for a honing tool, in which a frame is formed with a cylinder having a piston mounted therein and to which is connected a spindle or feed rod having the tools mounted thereon. The piston will effect rapid advance and retraction of the feed rod while the connection of the piston to the feed rod embodies threaded means which can be adjusted incrementally or manually to effect fine feeding movement of the tools following the rapid advance thereof. Automatic control means are provided for controlling the incremental feeding of the tools and for compensating for tool wear.

TL;DR: In this article, a tubular tool with an elongated tubular body adapted to support rotational movement about a longitudinal axis in a bore of a workpiece, and adapted for reciprocation in said bore, is described.
Abstract: A honing tool having an elongated tubular body adapted to be supported for rotational movement about a longitudinal axis in a bore of a workpiece, and adapted for reciprocation in said bore. The tubular body has a reduced diameter lower end on which is slidably mounted a symmetrical, reversible body shell which is secured to said body by a pair of symmetrical, reversible drive keys and a retainer end plug. A plurality of transverse and longitudinally extended slots are formed through the body shell and the reduced diameter lower end of the body, at evenly spaced radial positions, for the reception in each of the slots of a single honing stone which has an outer face that is convexly formed. A stone expander is operatively mounted in each of said slots, against the inner side of the honing stone in each respective slot, for pushing the honing stones outwardly into operative engagement with a bore to be finished. Each of said honing stone expanders is provided with retainer means for retaining the honing stone expanders in their respective slots when the honing stones are removed from the slots, and for retaining the honing stones in their slots when mounted therein. An expansion cone is operatively mounted within the honing body for operative engagement with the stone expanders.

TL;DR: In this paper, the etchant is applied to the surface of the clamped part during mechanical honing for the treatment of surfaces subject to high wear, eg running surfaces of engine cylinders.
Abstract: In the prodn of finely finished surface with low coefft of friction on alloy parts based on Al with high Si content and undissolved Si particles by mechanical honing and etching of the exposed insol Si particles with an etchant, the improvement comprises directing etchant onto the surface of the clamped part during mechanical honing Esp for the treatment of surfaces subject to high wear, eg running surfaces of engine cylinders Honing and etching are carried out simultaneously, rather than in separate stages

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a control mechanism for automatic shutting off of a machine tool such as a machining or a honing machine, without requiring further operator attention once the machine cycle is started and until the operation has been completed whereupon the machine operation is automatically terminated.
Abstract: An apparatus for automatically controlling the operations of a machine tool such as a honing machine or the like, which apparatus sets in motion apparatus which controls and maintains the operating cycle of the machine automatically and without requiring further operator attention once the machine cycle is started and until the operation has been completed whereupon the machine operation is automatically terminated. The subject apparatus includes control features which relieve the operator from maintaining pressure on a foot pedal or other machine operator member, it relieves the operator from making a decision as to when a machining or honing operation has been completed, it enables an operator to make more uniformly consistent parts, it minimizes the operator attention required to repetitively hone or otherwise produce similar parts, and the subject control apparatus may include features by which the rate at which the work engaging members are brought into operative engagement with the work is predeterminately controlled depending upon the condition of the work including the smoothness of the work surface and the characteristics of the work members. The present control apparatus is especially adaptable for use with automatic shut-off apparatus such as that disclosed in Sunnen U.S. Pat. No. 3,868,007, issued Feb. 25, 1975.

TL;DR: In this paper, a bushing is used for gripping an abrasive element while mechanically isolating the element from the remainder of the tool, and a slot liner is formed by four interconnected wall portions extending generally parallel to one another.
Abstract: A honing tool slot protecting bushing is disclosed for gripping an abrasive element while mechanically isolating the abrasive element from the remainder of the honing tool. The slot liner is in the form of a bushing having four interconnected wall portions extending generally parallel to one another and including either a lip arrangement or a threaded fastener arrangement for holding the bushing fixedly within the body of the honing tool. The abrasive element is supported by the bushing and retained therein due to the frictional forces between the abrasive element and the bushing.

TL;DR: In this article, a base metal such as the aluminum or iron housing of a conventional rotary or reciprocating-piston internal combustion engine and a sealing member applicable to the pistons or rotor thereof are coated with a layer of a wear-resistant alloy, such as tungsten-ruthenium or molybdenum-rhenium alloy, either by evaporating the elements of the alloy by electron guns onto the surfaces to be coated or by vaporizing a wire of the same alloy in a vacuum chamber by the application of a high-tension
Abstract: A base metal, such as the aluminum or iron housing of a conventional rotary or reciprocating-piston internal combustion engine, and a sealing member applicable to the pistons or rotor thereof are coated with a layer of a wear-resistant alloy, such as molybdenum-ruthenium or tungsten-ruthenium or molybdenum-rhenium alloy, either by evaporating the elements of the alloy by electron guns onto the surfaces to be coated or by vaporizing a wire of the same alloy in a vacuum chamber by the application of a high-tension electrical discharge through the wire from an electrical condenser bank. Depositing the alloy is done on a production basis by passing workpiece holders in a circular path through a vaccum chamber beneath the electron guns, followed by a realloying step through a laser beam, an acid dip, a rinsing dip, a drying by heat, and a final honing.
