TL;DR: In this paper, a process of remanufacturing drilling fluid pump cylinder liners to increase the liner working life and to improve the same involving the steps of: procuring a used liner having a hard metal alloy inner layer from a pump cylinder, and removing portions of the interior metal surface so as to form an enlarged diameter, accurately dimensioned cylindrical surface in the liner.
Abstract: A process of remanufacturing drilling fluid pump cylinder liners to increase the liner working life and to improve the same involving the steps of: procuring a used liner having a hard metal alloy inner layer from a pump cylinder, and removing portions of the interior metal surface so as to form an enlarged diameter, accurately dimensioned cylindrical surface in the liner. The remanufactured liner is then supplied for use with a specially manufactured piston having an enlarged diameter. Sequential remanufacturing steps can be carried out following several pumping and use cycles so that an orginal liner can be remanufactured multiple times. Prior to the procuring step, the worn liner can be checked while it is retained in the pump cylinder to determine whether extraction is necessary. If desired, the liner can be cleaned by a number of procedures and the outer diameter and configuration checked and, if necessary, resurfaced to restore the original outer surface dimensions. The metal removing step is carried out by honing or by internal grinding.

TL;DR: In this article, a gear finishing machine is provided which utilizes a driven rotary finishing gear and two idler finishing gears, in addition a reciprocating oscillatory mechanism that employs leaf springs as the coupling member, changes rotary into reciprocating motion, which serves to oscillate the workpiece gear across the finishing gears.
Abstract: A gear finishing machine is provided which utilizes a driven rotary finishing gear and two idler finishing gears. In addition a reciprocating oscillatory mechanism that employs leaf springs as the coupling member, changes rotary into reciprocating motion, which serves to oscillate the workpiece gear across the finishing gears. The machine is capable of either burnishing or honing the workpiece gear according to the ratio of the rotary to sliding velocity of the workpiece gear relative to the finishing gears, duty cycle, and loading pressures. Sensors are utilized which detect undersize and oversize gears, the withdrawing of the driven burnishing gear to the correct location to eject the workpiece gear and the presence of gears in the input and output chute which serve as control signals for the machine.

TL;DR: In this article, the internal honing of a steel workpiece (080 M 40) was investigated using three different grit sizes and a range of stone pressures, and the results show that changes in stone pressure have a significant influence on the metal removal rate and the stone wear.
Abstract: The internal honing of a steel workpiece (080 M 40) was investigated using three different grit sizes and a range of stone pressures. Metal removal rate, stone wear and surface finish were recorded. The results show that changes in stone pressure have a significant influence on the metal removal rate and the stone wear. It was also found that the surface finish of the workpiece was largely dependent on the grit size and independent of the stone pressure

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a holder having a plurality of radial guide slots angularly spaced from each other and an axial hole, a rough-finishing cone shaft and a finishing cone shaft or a single cone shaft axially slidably received in the hole, and axially spaced legs having inclined cam surfaces held in abutment with tapered portions of the cone shafts.
Abstract: A honing head comprises a holder having a plurality of radial guide slots angularly spaced from each other and an axial hole, a rough-finishing cone shaft and a finishing cone shaft or a single cone shaft axially slidably received in the hole, and a plurality of rough-finishing and finishing honing stone supports alternately disposed in the guide slots for radial movement therein. The honing stone supports have axially spaced legs having inclined cam surfaces held in abutment with tapered portions of the cone shafts. The honing stone supports are connected to the cone shafts by connectors having one ends fixed to the honing stone supports and second ends slidably received in grooves defined in the cone shafts or the supports and having portions inclined with respect to the axes of the cone shafts in the same direction and at the same angle as the inclination of the tapered portions. Thus, axial movement of the cone shafts causes the honing stone supports to be forcibly displaced radially into or out of the guide slots. The holder includes reinforcement members mounted in the guide slots which members serve to give the holder a required degree of mechanical strength and rigidity for stabilizing the honing stone supports during honing operation and preventing a boring tool attached to the holder from being vibrated during boring operation.

TL;DR: In this paper, a beam stroker honing machine is controlled to provide a vertical stroke by means of a series of non-contacting sensors, which sense the position of a hydraulic cylinder which moves the beam up and down.
Abstract: A beam stroker honing machine is controlled to provide a vertical stroke by means of a series of non-contacting sensors. The sensors are a plurality of reed switches which sense the position of a hydraulic cylinder which moves the honing beam up and down. The switches are operated by a magnetic piston associated with the cylinder and by selecting a switch the length of the stroke can be changed during machine operation. The honing machine also provides a power dwell operation which allows the honing tool to remain and reciprocate over a small distance at the bottom of the cylinder being honed for selectable period of time. After power dwell operation the honing machine is returned to its normal vertical stroke selected as above described.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to prevent the damage of the sliding section of a piston by machining the bore surface of a cylinder block made of a high Si-Al alloy, etching it, honing it and finishing it.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the damage of the sliding section of a piston by machining the bore surface of a cylinder block made of a high Si-Al alloy, etching it, honing it and finishing it. CONSTITUTION:The bore surface 2 of a cylinder block 1 integrally casted by high Si-Al alloy is bored, roller varnished and mirror-finished. The bore surface 2 is etched chemically by a mixed acid liquid, and hard Si particles 11 are deposited to the surface of an Al alloy matrisc 12 in approximately 2-5mu. The bore surface is honed for approximately ten sec. by means of a grindstone 23 elastically mounted to the outer circumference of a grindstone holder 21. Accordingly, the damage of the sliding section of the piston can be prevented because the angular sections 14 of the Si particles 11 are rounded and smoothed through the finishing machining of the bore surface 2.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To increase the life of a honing stone holder used for honing the inner surface of the plunger barrel of a fuel pump or the like by forming the guide parts of the honing stone holder by the electrical deposition process using diamond or borazon grains. CONSTITUTION:Guides 4 provided on the peripheral surfaces at the side face hole 1a in the axial direction of a holder body 1 through which a honing stone unit is to be projected and at an opposite side face hole 6a are formed by electrically adhering diamond grains 5 in the state buried in a plated nickel layer 7 formed by the electrodeposition of nickel. By so doing, regeneration of the guide parts 4 by applying electrodeposition again becomes possible when they are worn, and since there is no such problem as abrasion in the conventional chromium plating or thermal distortion by the soldering of hard metal chips, the life of the holder can be increased.

TL;DR: In this paper, the surface durability of the HB a 340 (hardened and tempered) gears is compared with that of hobbed gears by using a power circulating-type gear testing machine.
Abstract: In the previous reports, in order to obtain high surface durability of the HB a 340 (hardened and tempered) gears, the authors proposed that the initial tooth surface should be finished as smooth as possible. In this report, surface durability of gears finished by various methods (skiving --- finish-hobbing with carbide tipped hob, honing with screw-type hone, lapping and grinding) are compared with that of hobbed gears by using a power circulating-type gear testing machine. From these results, it is found that the smoother the surface, i) the less the number of pits and the smaller their size, ii) the smaller the rate of increase of pits with repeated contact stress, and iii) the higher the load-carrying capacity. Therefore, the influence of surface roughness on the surface durability is much more clarified, and the effect of various surface finishes can be grasped quantitatively.

TL;DR: In this article, an LiTaO3 signle crystal is cut into a prescribed wafer and the 2nd main surface is roughened by manual sliding and honing work.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve characteristics and yield by reducing bad conditions such as camber as much as possible by roughening the 2nd main surface of a wafer and then by etching the wafer before mirror-finishing the 1st main surface where input and output electrodes are to be formed. CONSTITUTION:An LiTaO3 signle crystal is cut into a prescribed wafer. Of this wafer, the 2nd main surface 5 opposing to the 1st main surface 2 where input and output electrodes are to be formed is roughened by manual sliding and honing work. Next, a solution having a 1:2 ratio of HF to HNO3 is used to etch the wafer at the room temperature for 15 minutes and after curvature is removed, electrodes are formed on this wafer to improve the yield while maintaining prescribed excellent characteristics. Namely, provess etching provides better results with regard to removal of camber and prevention of cracking in handling.
