TL;DR: In this article, an apparatus and method for sharpening a cutting tool, including the grinding and honing of the cutting tool is described and illustrated, and a variety of tool holders allow the sharpening of different types of cutting tools.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for sharpening a cutting tool, including the grinding and honing of the cutting tool is described and illustrated. The apparatus comprises a base plate with a biasing frame mounted on the base plate. A tool holder is clamped to the biasing frame and releasably clamps a cutting tool, having an edge which is to be sharpened. A variety of tool holders allow the sharpening of different types of cutting tools. The cutting tool, and particularly, the edge thereof, is held in a stationary position and an abrasive member is moved with respect to the cutting edge of the tool. The apparatus forces the cutting edge of the tool against the abrasive member with a uniform amount of pressure and at a selected angle. Both the pressure and the selected angle are easily adjustable by the user. When the major variables, such as angle of sharpening and the pressure between the abrasive element and tool are fixed, an accurate, correct and reproducible sharpening will occur. A precise sharpening of the tool will automatically result since only the abrasive stone is moved back and forth across the base plate under the cutting edge of the tool.

TL;DR: In this article, a virtual generating gear is derived from a virtual work gear, in the interior of which it meshes, while the generating gear in turn meshes with the work gear and an additional rotary speed component brings about rolling of the tool by the engagement zone between generating gear and work gear.
Abstract: Bevel and hypoid gears with precut teeth and any longitudinal tooth shapes are hard-finished with this continuous method. The tools provided with a coating of mechanically resistant material are bevel-gear-like bodies which are simple to produce on conventional gear-cutting machines for bevel gears. In the process, the stock removal is achieved by spraying an abrasive medium between tool and work gear. According to the invention, the tool is derived from a virtual generating gear, in the interior of which it meshes, while the generating gear in turn meshes with the work gear. An additional rotary speed component of the tool brings about rolling of the tool by the engagement zone between generating gear and work gear, that is, past the work gear, as a result of which the contact between tool and work gear gradually comes about (feed movement). The change in the shaft angle between tool and work gear permits an infeed for the specific control of the chip thickness. The complicated spatial rolling movement of the tool in the process is converted according to the invention by a transformation into a simple plane axial displacement in combination with a shaft-angle rotation, which according to the invention is realised by a finishing machine with only three moving machine axes and two machine spindles. The method can be carried out in the case of all gear tooth systems which can be lapped, by additional movements of the machine axes all corrections of contact-pattern form, size and position are ... Abstract: In a honing system for producing a light-scattering surface on a photoreceptor substrate for use in xerographic printers, a constant concentration maintenance device is employed to drain an appropriate amount of liquid from a honing slurry to match the amount of liquid added during rinsing of the photoreceptor substrate. The constant concentration maintenance device is mechanically effected by vibrations in the mixing apparatus of the honing system, facilitating separation of the liquid an solid parts of the slurry. Delay between honing and rinsing is eliminated through use of the same honing booth for both operations.

Abstract: The method and apparatus for honing and treating the pad engaging surfaces of vehicle brake rotors or discs consisting of engaging the rotor surface with a plurality of moving abrasive elements mounted upon flexible resilient stems wherein a smooth finished surface is formed. The abrasive elements are rotated about an axis which may be coincident with the brake rotor axis of rotation during machining, or may be offset and parallel thereto, to produce a basket weave machining pattern. A plurality of hone holders may be used when the hone axis of rotation is offset relative to the rotor axis whereby both of the rotor's surfaces may be simultaneously finished. The practice of the invention also permits the braking surfaces of aluminum alloy rotors to be oxidized to form a hard, wear resistant finish thereon.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method of applying a coating of components in the vicinity or working chambers, such as internal combustion chambers, with a chemically inert, anti-adhesive metal such as niobium or zirconium.
Abstract: In place of conventional machining of cylinder paths or tracks of piston engines, a honing machining without a rotary component is performed at least as a final machining operation so that the remaining small honing tracks are directed longitudinally and consequently permit an improved running-in behavior in conjunction with the piston rings. A preferred honing tool this has honing segments taking up a large circumferential portion and which are preferably resiliently constructed in Such a way that they automatically adapt to the cylinder path. A coating of components in the vicinity or working chambers, such as internal combustion chambers, e.g. of piston rings, comprises a chemically inert, anti-adhesive metal, such as e.g. niobium or zirconium. It is applied in a target process in vacuo and has a small thickness of approximately 8 micrometers. Together with the final machining by honing in the axial direction and in conjunction with a corresponding cylinder path, there is an improved running-in behavior, lower pollutant formation, better sealing and oil scraping.

Abstract: An injection molded disposable honing tool is made by an injection molding process. The tool has an elongated rectangular base from which projects an elongated section which may be somewhat smaller. The elongated section terminates in a working face. The entire tool may incorporate abrasive therein homogeneously or simply the elongated section which terminates in the working face. A shot of a plastic melt such as nylon is formed with abrasive mixed homogeneously which is then injected into a mold. For higher cost abrasive, a two shot process may be used with one shot being abrasive free. Alternatively, an abrasive-free insert may be placed in the mold before the abrasive mix is injected. The surface of the working face may be formed to act as a working face of closely packed fingers by placing patterns in the mold surface forming the working face, or subsequently cutting the working face, or a combination of both.

TL;DR: In this paper, the deformation of the work centers is detected and stored as a function of the angle of rotation of a workpiece, and a correction signal is calculated from the stored profile and superimposed on the infeed member for the Infeed slide.
Abstract: A honing wheel (28) is in engagement with a gear (16) and is driven by a motor (33). During rotation of the work spindle (10), the deformation of the work centres (8,9) is detected and stored as a function of the angle of rotation of the workpiece. A correction signal is then calculated from the stored profile and superimposed on the infeed member for the infeed slide (3) in synchronism with the angle of rotation of the work spindle (10). Thus toothing errors can be eliminated, the tool life of the honing wheel (28) can be utilised in optimum manner and the machining time can be minimised.
