Abstract: The IEEE 802.9 working group is preparing draft standard for an Integrated Voice and Data Local Area Network (IVDLAN) interface for use in an office environment. An IVDLAN, or Multi-Service LAN (MSLAN), must be capable of supporting a variety of services at the customer's premises. Currently these services are supported by separate networks, PBXs, for telephony (voice) and LANs for computer interconnection (data). The standard will define Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical layers that are compatible with IEEE 802 and ISDN standards and architectures. These functions are provided in a single interface. The paper describes the need for and operation of the IEEE 802.9 IVDLAN, its applications, and some factors affecting its commercial feasibility.< >

Abstract: A description is given of the architecture of the token-ring LAN controller (TRC) compatible with IEEE 802.5 media access control (MAC) protocol, which integrates a frame transmit/receive hardware, a high-speed protocol processor, a three-channel DMA controller (DMAC) and large-capacity dual-port RAMs. The performance analysis of the frame transmit/receive shows that the TRC is suitable not only for small computers, but also for high-performance applications

Abstract: A comparative evaluation of standard local area networks operating in time-constrained environments is performed. The analyzed protocols are token bus (IEEE 802.4), token ring (IEEE 802.5), and a modified version of CSMA/CD (carrier-sense multiple-access with collision detection) (IEEE 802.3). The priority disciplines necessary to make the systems crisis-free are discussed in connection with the relationships between the slot time, the number of nodes in the network, and their crisis times. In each case, the efficiency and the production of the system (in Mb/s) as functions of the length of the data field are determined. >

Abstract: IEEE 488.2 defines standard formats, protocols, and common commands for IEEE 488 programmable instrumentation. Conventional software techniques can be used to write a parser that implements the formats and common commands. Such a parser requires a simple data stream interface, where data are simply gotten (commands) or placed (responses). The author describes a software driver for an IEEE 488 interface. This driver provides a simple data stream interface to the parser while conforming to the protocol requirements of IEEE 488.2. The crux of this implementation is the isolation of the message exchange control protocol, which is implemented with a simple state machine, from the parser. The protocol requirements of IEEE 488.2 have been converted to a state machine where each transition is the result of an external signal. In this process some anomalies in IEEE 488.2 have been identified and corrected. >
