TL;DR: A new method of determining focal spot size is presented in which the effective size of the focal spot is indicated and irregularities of shape and distribution of emitted radiations are considered, and the size is much smaller than that determined by the pinhole method.
Abstract: The authors present a new method of determining focal spot size in which the effective size of the focal spot is indicated and irregularities of shape and distribution of emitted radiations are considered. The size of the focal spot as determined by this method is much smaller than that determined by the pinhole method, although the exact relationship is not constant. The fact that the focal spot behaves as if it were smaller than its nominal size helps explain why geometric distortion with magnification techniques is less than that anticipated from the nominal focal spot size.
