Abstract: Diagnosis and presurgical planning for the correction of mandibular prognathism is essential. Several methods of preoperative preparation for surgical correction have been described. The technique allows flexibility in selecting the correct surgical procedure for each mandibular deformity. By preplanning the occlusal scheme and pregrinding the teeth, an ideal occlusal relationship can be developed. This insures maximum stability during the postoperative fixation period as well as the final result of a good occlusion. The preplanning of the exact site of osteotomy or ostectomy insures that the approximation of the sections of bone will be accurate, thus promoting rapid union of the segments. The main disadvantage of this technique is that it is time consuming and rather expensive.
