TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a payment system where a smartphone presents artwork for a payment card (e.g., a Visa card) that has been selected by a user from a virtual wallet of such cards.
Abstract: To make a payment, a smartphone presents artwork for a payment card (e.g., a Visa card) that has been selected by a user from a virtual wallet of such cards. Encoded in the displayed artwork is payment information that has been encrypted with a context-dependent session key. A cooperating system (e.g., a retailer's point of sale system) uses a camera to capture an image of the artwork, and independently creates the session key from its own context sensor(s), enabling decryption of the payment information. Such technology provides a superior transaction security model at a fraction of the cost of competing chip card payment systems (which require, e.g., expensive physical cards, and single-purpose reader hardware). A great variety of other features and arrangements are also detailed.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a system for tokenization as a service (TAS) which decouples a tokenization service from other services offered by a merchant service provider, and offers the tokenisation service as a stand-alone service.
Abstract: Systems, devices, apparatuses, and methods for providing tokenization as a service are provided. Embodiments of the invention involve decoupling a “tokenization service” from other services offered by a merchant service provider, and offering the tokenization service as a stand-alone service. In accordance with an embodiment, a merchant service provider can receive payment data associated with a transaction between a consumer and a first entity. The merchant service provider can generate a payment token that represents the payment data and transmit a copy of the payment token to the first entity. The first entity can then transmit the payment token and order information to a second entity specified in the transaction. The merchant service provider can subsequently receive a request to complete the transaction from the second entity. The request can include the copy of the payment token from the second entity.

TL;DR: In this article, a system and method of tokenizing sensitive cardholder payment information for use in cashless transactions is presented, where a merchant receives a request to process a cashless transaction between a merchant and a purchaser using first payment data stored with an electronic wallet provider on behalf of the purchaser.
Abstract: A system and method of tokenizing sensitive cardholder payment information for use in cashless transactions includes receiving a request to process a cashless transaction between a merchant and a purchaser using first payment data stored with an electronic wallet provider on behalf of the purchaser. First payment data is retrieved from the electronic wallet provider. The first payment data is tokenized into a payment token, and provided to the merchant for use in completing the cashless transaction. The merchant issues a request to process payment for the cashless transaction using the payment token. The payment token is detokenized into second payment data, with correspondence between the first and second payment data being indicative of payment token authenticity. Payment for the cashless transaction is processed using the second payment data, and the merchant is provided with a response indicating either the success or failure of the payment processing.

TL;DR: In this article, an arbitraged enhanced payment processing system in association with a distributed enhanced processing system includes a merchant point of sale (POS) terminal system and a remote payment management system.
Abstract: An arbitraged enhanced payment processing system in association with a distributed enhanced payment processing system includes a merchant point of sale (POS) terminal system and a remote payment management system. The POS terminal system initiates a transaction that includes receiving a payment amount, a purchaser account identifier, a virtual electronic payment indicator, and a merchant ID via a payment client. Subsequently, the POS terminal system outputs the transaction to the remote payment management system which generates a token for the transaction. The payment management system then provides the purchaser account identifier, a merchant account identifier, and the payment amount to a payment processing servicer. Upon receiving a payment processing servicer response, the payment management system outputs the response and token to the POS terminal system.

TL;DR: In this paper, a reader device coupled to a mobile point-of-sale (POS) terminal can be used to encrypt payment information using a third party encryption mechanism, such as derived unique key per transaction (DUKPT).
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are directed to methods, systems, and apparatuses for enabling payment information received via a reader device coupled to a mobile point-of-sale (POS) terminal to be communicated in a secure manner to a third party service provider for payment processing of a transation between a merchant and a consumer. Some embodiments are directed to communication of the payment information received from a reader device using a payment processing mechanism (e.g., a hosted order page) of the merchant to process payment information via the third party service provider in a secure manner. The reader device can encrypt payment information using a third party encryption mechanism, such as derived unique key per transaction (DUKPT). The third party encryption mechanism can be used or accessed by the third party service provider to enable end-to-end security for payment processing.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for facilitating contactless payment using cloud- based wallet containing payment credentials (e.g. Visa, Mastercard, American Express) using a near field communication (NFC)-capable device and payment gateway servers. A user can use their existing payment card, herein referred to as a funding card, for contactless payments. A second payment card, herein referred to as a virtual card, is generated. The virtual card is associated with the funding card on a payment gateway server. The virtual card is used on a NFC-enabled mobile device. When a payment is initiated, the virtual card data is sent through the NFC system from a point of sale terminal. This information is sent to the payment gateway server, which retrieves the funding card to make the payment. The funding card, not the virtual card, is used to transfer the money to make payment.

Abstract: This paper examines the fundamental relationship between retail payments and the real economy. Using data from across 27 European markets over the period 1995-2009, the results confirm that migration to efficient electronic retail payments stimulates the overall economy, consumption and trade. Among different payment instruments, this relationship is strongest for card payments, followed by credit transfers. Cheque payments are found to have a relatively low macroeconomic impact. Retail payment transaction technology itself is also associated positively to real economic aggregates. We also show that initiatives to integrate and harmonize retail payment markets foster trade and consumption and thereby have a beneficial effect for whole economy. Additionally, the findings reveal that the impact of retail payments on the real economy is more pronounced in euro area countries. Our findings are robust to different regression specifications. The study supports the adoption of policies promoting a swift migration to efficient and harmonized electronic payment instruments.
