TL;DR: In this paper, an electronic monitoring system for pipelines and the like utilizing counting techniques for determining the difference between fluid volume supplied into a pipeline and the fluid volume removed from the pipeline is presented.
Abstract: There is disclosed herein an electronic monitoring system for pipelines and the like utilizing counting techniques for determining the difference between fluid volume supplied into a pipeline and the fluid volume removed from the pipeline. An error factor is employed and, based upon the volume difference, provides compensation for normal difference between the input and output volume measuring devices. This error factor then compensates for the normal difference between input and output volume. Abnormal deviations can then be detected to determine fluid leaks and the like for actuating alarm and control circuits for providing an alarm and/or terminating fluid flow in the pipeline system. There is also disclosed herein the manner in which the present electronic system can be utilized for monitoring a pipeline system with multiple input meters or outputs meters. There is also disclosed herein methods for precisely determining the normal difference between input and output meters.

Abstract: A digital pipeline processing system for implementing both vocoder and data modem functions. The pipeline capability is provided by three circulating memories and two associated arithmetic units. The first circulating memory and its arithmetic unit implement the functions of vocoder spectrum analysis modem modulation and modem demodulation. The second circulating memory and its arithmetic unit implement the functions of vocoder pitch extraction, vocoder parameter filtering, and vocoder speech synthesis. The third circulating memory is used for temporary storage of data while computations are carried out by the other circulating memories and their arithmetic units. The processing system also comprises a control unit which provides timing and gating signals for control of the remainder of the processor, an impulse response synthesizer which provides sinusoids used in speech synthesis, encoding and decoding circuitry for formating data, and a plurality of read-only memories for permanent storage of functions required by the processor.

TL;DR: The technique results in the improved regulation of the pressure at the load end of the pipeline while satisfying the demand and concurrently reducing the energy input requirements by up to 10%.
Abstract: With the increasing application of optimization techniques, it is natural to apply tha techniques of boundary control problems to industrial systems characterized by distributed parameters. This paper presents a method which specifies the conditions for the optimal operation of a natural gas pipeline. The performance index of the system is the amount of energy which must be delivered to the natural gas by the compres sor in order to satisfy the time-varying load conditions. The method proceeds by formulating the problem as a boundary control problem for a system described by a set of nonlinear partial differential equations. The equations are linearized and the resulting differential equations are solved. The optimization technique uses a gradient search algorithm. The technique results in the improved regulation of the pressure at the load end of the pipeline while satisfying the demand and concurrently reducing the energy input requirements by up to 10%. Numerical results of the optimization are present...

TL;DR: In this paper, a discrete amt. of radioactive isotope (e.g. sulphur 35) is injected into the fluid at the beginning of the pipe line at predetermined intervals along the pipeline.
Abstract: A discrete amt. of radioactive isotope (e.g. sulphur 35) is injected into the fluid (e.g. heating oil) at the beginning of the pipe line. Radiation detectors and timing units are located at predetermined intervals along the pipeline. Alternatively thermal neutrons are injected into the fluid and registered as they pass along the pipeline.

TL;DR: A special-purpose gas chromatograph is described which will detect, at the receiving end of a pipeline, a tracer substance put in at the sending end between two successive parcels of product.
Abstract: A special-purpose gas chromatograph is described which will detect, at the receiving end of a pipeline, a tracer substance put in at the sending end between two successive parcels of product. It repeatedly analyses the product in the pipeline at 10 s intervals and will detect the tracer at concentrations well below 1 ppm.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors obtained an optimal policy for transient control of a gas pipeline and a real-time sub-optimal control is suggested, and they showed that the suggested suboptimal policy gives very poor performance and that the optimal policy provides clues that lead to conventional control that gives good performance.
Abstract: A recent paper obtains an optimal policy for transient control of a gas pipeline and a real-time suboptimal control is suggested. This correspondence shows that 1) the suggested sub-optimal control gives very poor performance and 2) the optimal policy provides clues that lead to conventional control that gives good performance.
