TL;DR: Diversification of monocultural systems with other crops, especially non-host plants, seems to be one effective strategy in tropical pest management, and date of planting affects pest interactions in these systems.

TL;DR: Chinese methods of fish culture were evaluated for potential use in animal waste management, pollution control, and the production of protein.
Abstract: Chinese methods of fish culture were evaluated for potential use in animal waste management, pollution control, and the production of protein. Two ponds were stocked with grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molotrix), bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), carp (Cyprinus carpio), northern largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides salmoides), channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), and the hybrid of bigmouth buffalo female (Ictiobus cyprinellus) and black buffalo male (I. niger). One pond (0.127 hectare) received the total wastes from five growing pigs (about 39 pigs/hectare of water area), the other pond (0.121 hectare) received the wastes from eight pigs (66 pigs/hectare). Two consecutive lots of pigs were fattened during the study. Over a fish-growing period of about 170 days (May to October 1975) the net increments in fish biomass were 2,971 kg/hectare in the 0.127-hectare pond and 3,834 kg/hectare in the 0.121-hectare pond. A beneficial influence by the fish on wat...

TL;DR: In this paper, economic and ecological consequences of these two cropping alternatives in a densely-populated area of eastern Nigeria suggests that a focus on monoculture as a panacea for increasing productivity and food supply is questionable.
Abstract: Although polyculture or interplanting is a dominant production method used by traditional cultivators in the tropics, there has been increasing emphasis on monoculture in agricultural development planning. Analysis of the economic and ecological consequences of these two cropping alternatives in a densely-populated area of eastern Nigeria suggests that a focus on monoculture as a panacea for increasing productivity and food supply is questionable. Polyculture is held to be ecologically superior to monoculture and, in the field area examined, economically more productive as well. Thus further investigation of polycultural approaches to agricultural development would appear to be warranted.

TL;DR: Observations of fish growth in polyculture ponds suggest that fertilization of pond water by the excreta of grass carp may enhance the growth of the indigenous Indian carps catla, rohu, and mrigal to about the same extent as fertilization by the addition of manure.
Abstract: Observations of fish growth in polyculture ponds suggest that fertilization of pond water by the excreta of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) may enhance the growth of the indigenous Indian carps catla (Catla catla), rohu (Labeo rohita), and mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) to about the same extent as fertilization by the addition of manure.

TL;DR: The results of these experiments indicated that fishes like mullets, milk fish and Sillago sihama and the prawn, P. indicus, could be cultured advantageously in the brackish water fields of the Mulky region.
Abstract: The Karnataka state is having about 5000 ha of brackish water areas suitable for fish culture. The results of these experiments indicated that fishes like mullets, milk fish and Sillago sihama and the prawn, P. indicus, could be cultured advantageously in the brackish water fields of the Mulky region. Since the fields are found to be very productive, no artificial or supplementary feeding is required for the culture of these fishes.
