TL;DR: In this paper, the cycloconverter is controlled to maintain a near unity power factor, and the first inverter is connected to neutral by a capacitor to augment operation for some uses.
Abstract: Direct current (DC) power is converted to alternating current (AC) power by a series combination of first DC to AC converter (inverter) and a cycloconverter connected in parallel with a second DC to AC converter (inverter). All three of the converters are naturally commutated. A commutation voltage for both the cycloconverter and the first inverter is provided by a reactive power source. To augment operation for some uses, the output of the cycloconverter is connected to an inductor, and the AC side of the first inverter is connected to neutral by a capacitor. The cycloconverter is controlled to maintain a near unity power factor.
