Abstract: Human hair powder reference material was prepared and certified for elemental composition. Human scalp hair (from Japanese men) was washed in a non-ionic detergent solution in an ultrasonic cleaner, dried, ground in an agate ball mill, sieved through a polyethylene net, blended, bottled (1100 vials, 2 g each), and finally sterilized by 60Co radiation. The prepared material satisfied the homogeneity criteria for a reference material. We determined trace elements by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and atomic absorption spectrometry and investigated matrix interference effects. The material was certified by using the data obtained by various analytical techniques; certified values are provided for Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Sr, and Zn. The elemental composition of this reference material is considered similar to normal values for the male Japanese population.

Abstract: Mussel tissue powder reference material was prepared from whole soft parts of common mussels (Mytilus edulis). The mussel tissue was cryogenically ground, freeze-dried, sieved to pass an 80-mesh screen, blended, bottled and finally sterilised by Co-60 radiation. The prepared material satisfied the homogeneity criteria for a reference material. Matrix interference effects in inductively coupled plasma atomic-emission and graphite furnace atomic-absorption analyses of the material were investigated; for the determination of trace elements by graphite furnace atomic-absorption spectrometry a standard additions procedure was used.Certification of the material was performed using the data obtained by various analytical techniques and certified values are provided for fourteen elements. The elemental composition of the mussel certified reference material is similar to those of mussels collected from unpolluted waters.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To preserve a food by a method having improved sterilizing action on harmful molds such as various germs, mildews, etc., by putting the food and a material on which a chlorite is adsorbed in a hermetically sealable container. CONSTITUTION:(A) 10wt% preferably 0.1-5wt% chlorite is adsorbed on (B) a porous material (e.g., zeolite, etc.), and (C) 10-30wt% (based on the component B) water is added to it. The prepared material on which the chlorite is adsorbed and a food are put in a bag of plastic film, and used.
