TL;DR: The continuing importance of infectious diseases in most developing countries is emphasized, the levels of health care that might operate in a typical developing country are described, and some of the difficulties of diagnosing infectious diseases under these circumstances are described.
Abstract: Infectious diseases remain the major health problem for many developing countries, causing a high mortality among children and much serious illness among children and adults. This symposium will consider the problem of rapid diagnosis of these conditions in field laboratories. I will emphasize the continuing importance of infectious diseases in most developing countries, describe the levels of health care that might operate in a typical developing country, and describe some of the difficulties of diagnosing infectious diseases under these circumstances. Finally, I will review briefly some of the diagnostic approaches that are being developed to help to overcome these problems.
