TL;DR: The authors conceptualized the research review as a scientific inquiry involving five stages that parallel those of primary research, and the functions, sources of variance, and potential threats to validity associated with each stage were described.
Abstract: The inferences made in integrative research reviews are as central to the validity of behavioral science knowledge as those made in primary research. Therefore, research reviewers must pay the same attention to rigorous methodology that is required of primary researchers. This article conceptualizes the research review as a scientific inquiry involving five stages that parallel those of primary research. The functions, sources of variance, and potential threats to validity associated with each stage are described.

TL;DR: The Public Interest Research Group research designs, coming out of Nader's college-based program, are used to illustrate the kinds of things that might be explored and the possible methodologies as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Students actually do sociological research in the community. They self-select into secondary research, primary research, and/or experiential projects. No one is forced into the applied approach nor penalized for opting to do traditional work. For the applied projects, there is a pyramid model of successively more complex roles. Beginning at the freshman level, in Social Problems, alternative joint projects are examined. The Public Interest Research Group research designs, coming out of Nader's college-based program, are used to illustrate the kinds of things that might be explored and the possible methodologies. A special library is then set up for the applied group to enlarge their knowledge of the subject; they meet with the professor and an upper-division major who has had both social statistics and methods of research. As project coordinator, this student earns credit in Independent Study and is responsible for disseminating information to the group, conducting special sessions, assigning responsibility for segments of the job, developing a PERK chart

TL;DR: The format for research reports is discussed and critical questions to keep in mind are pointed out to help you make decisions about research that might be transferable to your own setting.
Abstract: In this last article in a series dealing with three important elements of research, the authors present guidelines for reading a research report. They discuss the format for research reports and point out critical questions to keep in mind as you critique a research study or read published research reports. These questions help you make decisions about research that might be transferable to your own setting.
