Abstract: The paper reviews the implications of organizational theory for nursing administration. The Influences of scientific management and human relations approaches to organizational analysis on hospital organization are described. These approaches, however, are Inadequate since many of the current administrative problems arc structural In origin. The compliance structure of hospitals, the social glue holding It together so that it can achieve its goals, has changed. Hospitals have been transformed from essentially normative organizations built upon the common cultural values of Its participants into utilitarian ones less able to achieve the goal of good patient care.
