TL;DR: When sliding occurs between two metal surfaces or between a non-metal and a metal surface in an aqueous environment, it results in a modification of the electrochemical processes occurring at the metal surface by the disturbance of layers on the surface which may be an adsorbed monolayer or a thicker film of reaction product as mentioned in this paper.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the behavior of some commercial alloys in order to obtain data for the selection of bronzes for seals and bearings in reciprocating machinery, using a Dow-Corning LFW-1 friction and wear testing machine.

TL;DR: In this article, a theoretical approach to the subject is adopted in which the perfect wheel is considered in terms of a balanced system of matrix wear vs. the useful life of the diamond point.

Abstract: THE CONCLUSIONS of the report ‘Lubrication (Tribology)’—better known as the Jost report— were meant to act as a bucket of cold water to bring industry round to the realisation that it was losing vast amounts of money annually due to various malpractices in the art of lubrication and the resulting consequences. The not inconsiderable financial loss mentioned resulted primarily from three sources; maintenance and replacement costs, losses consequential upon breakdown and increased investment required because of reduced machinery life.
