TL;DR: Seven species are agriculturally important pests introduced from the Northern hemisphere and only two are native to South AmericafA, which could be explained by Heie's hypothesis based on palaeontological data.
Abstract: A list of eleven aphid species collected in the "Norte Chico" area in northern Chile is given. Aphis dunielue Remaudiere, Eucarazzia elegans{Ferrm) andHystenmeura setariae (Thomas) are new records to Chile. In the collections seven species are agriculturally important pests introduced from the Northern hemisphere and only two are native to South AmericafA. danielaeand Uroleucon m«cv;/ai(Blanchard)), in accordance with previous experiences ofa peor endemic aphid fauna in the Southern hemisphere. This could be explained by Heie's hypothesis based on palaeontological data.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new pathovar was proposed for the control of aphids, which can be used either as a theraputant or a protectant, and proved to be very effective in controlling aphids.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a composition for the biological control of insect pests, such as aphids, consisting of an effective number of viable sposes of the fugus Alternaria alternata (new pathavar) and a satisfactory and agronomically acceptable carrier. The carrier can be water an aquas solution containing a spreading of sticking agent or powder. The composition can be used either as a theraputant or protectant. The new pathovar proved very effective for the control of aphids. Inoculation of aphids with the spores of the pathogen always resulted in their death. It is possible that the death of the aphids is effected by the production of an enzyme (an active chitinase) which hydrolyzes the chitinous exoskeleton, or of a toxic metabolite (a toxic), or both. The new pathovar proved an aggressive pathogen against the following species of aphids: Myzus nicotianae, M.persicae, Aphis fabae, macrosiphum euphorbiae, Brevicoryne brassicae, Uroleucon sp. As well as against 5 more as yet unidentified species of aphids. The invention also relates to the use of said composition for the biological control of insect pests, such as aphids, as well as to a method of depositing it on the foliage of susseptible hosts plants.
