TL;DR: In this article, a high aperture, wide-angle zoom lens with a positive power zoom portion and a strong fourth surface is presented, which has a minimal number of elements and is compact in both length and diameter.
Abstract: Particular lens parameters are provided which give good corrections in a high aperture, wide-angle zoom lens which has a positive power zoom portion and a strong fourth surface. The zoom lens has a minimal number of elements and is compact in both length and diameter.

TL;DR: The number of elements which can be tolerated in optical systems for use in the 8 w-13 w infra-red waveband is limited to perhaps two or three as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The number of elements which can be tolerated in optical systems for use in the 8 w-13 w infra-red waveband is limited to perhaps two or three. This paper shows that useful though crude zoom systems can be designed with such small numbers of elements. Several all germanium systems of varying zoom ratio are described and an evaluation of their aberrations is given.
