Starch-PVA composite films with zinc-oxide nanoparticles and phytochemicals as intelligent pH sensing wraps for food packaging application.

This study reports the optical, structural, electrical and dielectric properties of Poly (vinyl alcohol) thin films membranes with embedded ZnO nanoparticles (PVA/ZnO) obtained by the solution casting method at low temperature of deposition. Fourier Transform Infrared spectra showed the characteristics peaks, which correspond to O–H and Zn–O bonds present in the hybrid material. The X-ray diffraction patterns indicated the presence of ZnO structure into the films. The composite material showed low absorbance and a wide band of gap energy from 5.5 to 5.83 eV. The surface morphology for the thin films of PVA/ZnO was studied by Atomic Force Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy. The electrical properties of the membranes were also characterized by current-voltage characteristics and the DC conductivity showed Arrhenius behavior with values of activation energy from 0.62 to 0.78 eV and maximum conductivity at 2.4 × 10−12 S/cm. The dielectric properties of the nanocomposites were measured from low to high frequencies, and the results showed a high dielectric constant (e) in the order of 104 at low frequency and values from e ≈ 2000 to 100 in the range of 1 KHz–1 MHz respectively. The properties of PVA/ZnO such as the high permittivity and the low temperature of processing make it a suitable material for potential applications in the development of flexible electronic devices.

Polymeric Nanocomposites Membranes with High Permittivity Based on PVA-ZnO Nanoparticles for Potential Applications in Flexible Electronics.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of CuO nanoparticles on the structural, thermal and electrical properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) thin films. The thin films were prepared by a solution casting technique with different weight percentages viz., 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 wt% of CuO nanoparticles in PVA matrix. The fabricated nanocomposite thin films were structurally characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, while differential scanning calorimetry indicated the effect of CuO nanoparticles on thermal properties of PVA. The surface morphology of the films was determined by scanning electron microscopy technique. Dielectric properties were analysed using high frequency LCR metre and were found to be dependent on frequency and CuO concentration. Dielectric constant decreased with increase in both frequency and CuO concentration. Dielectric loss increased with frequency increase and decreased with increase in CuO concentration. AC conductivity increased with increase in frequency. PVA-2.0 wt% CuO nanocomposite was found to possess desirable properties such as low dielectric constant and low dielectric loss which makes it a desirable material for use in microelectronics industry.

Investigation of structural and electrical properties of novel CuO–PVA nanocomposite films

Structural, thermal, optical and conductivity studies of Co/ZnO nanoparticles doped CMC polymer for solid state battery applications

This study has been conducted to investigate the effect of incorporating CuO nanoparticles inside PVA matrix with the aim of enhancing the mechanical properties of PVA for reinforcement purposes. Films were prepared by solution intercalation technique with 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 wt% CuO nanofiller content taking neat PVA as the reference for the study. Structural characterisations of the prepared nanocomposite films were carried out by FTIR, SEM and XRD techniques. Various mechanical parameters such as tensile strength, elastic modulus, flexural strength and toughness were investigated and significant enhancement in the properties of polyvinyl alcohol films containing CuO nanofillers was observed. Elastic modulus and toughness showed a linear relation with respect to nanofiller concentration at low wt%, whereas at higher wt% of CuO, the nature was observed to be non-linear. PVA-2.0 wt% CuO nanocomposite showed the highest values of flexural strength, toughness and tensile strength among all the fabricated nanocomposite films.

Enhanced mechanical properties of polyvinyl alcohol composite films containing copper oxide nanoparticles as filler

This study has been conducted with the objective of investigating the effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles on the structural and electrical properties of polyvinyl alcohol films. The fabricated nanocomposites were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–visible (vis) spectra, X-ray diffraction and SEM techniques. UV–vis spectra showed that the addition of ZnO nanoparticles did not affect the absorbance in the visible region of nanocomposites. The SEM image showed that ZnO nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed throughout the entire film’s polymeric matrix. The dielectric properties were found to be strongly dependent on frequency and nanofiller content. AC conductivity σac of polyvinyl alcohol/ZnO nanocomposites increased with increasing frequency. The dissipation factor tan δ also increased with nanoparticle addition and decreased with frequency. Influence of zinc oxide nanoparticles on structural and electrical properties of polyvinyl alcohol films

In this work, the effect of nano cadmium oxide material on the physico-mechanical and electrical properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films was studied. A series of PVA/CdO nanocomposites with varying amounts of cadmium oxide (CdO) viz. 0, 0.5, 1.0 2.0 and 4.0 wt% have been prepared by solution casting method. The prepared polymer nanocomposites were analysed for XRD, SEM, FTIR and UV–vis spectra. Further, the tensile strength and elongation of these polymer nanocomposites were measured and compared with those of the neat polymer systems. UV–vis spectra showed that the absorbance increases with the increasing amount of nano CdO. The nano CdO particles are not agglomerated in the PVA matrix as observed from SEM images. The influence of frequency on the dielectric properties was studied at room temperature. The dielectric properties provide the information about the dielectric relaxation and possible interaction between the nano material and polymer matrix which can be exploited for microwave applications.

Structural mechanical and electrical property evaluation of nano cadmium oxide polyvinyl alcohol composites

Polymer nanocomposites represent a new class of materials in which nanomaterials act as the reinforcing material in composites, wherein small additions of nanomaterials lead to large enhancements in thermal, optical and mechanical properties. A boost in these properties is due to the large interfacial area per unit volume or weight of the nanoparticles and the interactions between the particle and the polymer. Micro sized particles used as reinforcing agents scatter light, thus reducing light transmittance and optical clarity. Efficient nanoparticle dispersion combined with good polymer–particle interfacial adhesion eliminates scattering and allows the exciting possibility of developing strong yet transparent films, coatings and membranes. This paper aims at synthesising zinc oxide nanoparticles which are reinforced in poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer. The mechanical properties showed that the tensile strength of the PVA nanocomposites increases with the increase in the amount of nanoparticles.
